  1. I want to second the post up above that recommended Cognitive Behavior Therapy specific to OCD. My sister has had SEVERE OCD for over 10 year and has had 2 inpatient hospitalizations for it. The only things that helps, IMHO is medication in combination with Cognitive Behavior Therapy. My sister improved greatly after each hospitalization but then couldn't maintain because she couldn't find a follow-up therapist who could be helpful at all! The problem is, that they are hard to find. Once one is located (maybe with the help of the OCD foundation), I would recommend just moving to whatever that town is. I know that may sound extreme, but my sister is stuck in her home, with no help near her and I don't know if she'll ever get the help she needs again. I realize that she is an extreme case, but she was leading a normal life 15 years ago.
  2. I recently saw on the Great Homeschool convention website that they had issued an apology for how they handled the situation with Ken Ham last year. It is my understanding that Mr. Ham would no longer be invited to present at the GHCs because of the way he spoke against another speaker. I had written the Great Homeschool Convention board a letter telling them that I thought they handled it very well and made a wise decision. Does anyone know why they now feel that they didn't handle the situation well and have subsequently apologized to Mr. Ham?
  3. I just want to add a unique perspective. Some here, seem worried that these texts are not advanced enough for those wishing to continue on to do college science work. I entered a state college years ago as a chemistry major. I had not even had ANY chemistry class in high school, believe it or not,and I did fine. Now, I don't necessarily suggest this as a college preparation strategy. However, I mention it just to say that the first year of chemistry in college will start from the beginning. It will progress at a little faster pace, and therefore it is best to have had some chemistry in high school, but Apologia science is very adequate to lay the necessary foundation. (And Apologia chemistry is WAY more than I had when I started out in college.) You don't have to KNOW EVERYTHING before you start college. But what you do know, know well! My husband is a college math professor. He is amazed at how great some of his students look from their high school transcript (high ACT, upper level math, etc. ) but who don't have the basics down well AT ALL.
  4. Yes, I was just pre-reading "The Church in History" used for dialectic Year 2 and it is SO BIASED toward a reformed theological perspective. I don't even think I can use it. I wouldn't like for secular students to think that that was "THE" christian church history.
  5. I read one poster say that cashiers/clerks are friendlier here in the south. I cannot agree with this. I'm amazed when I go back home to the midwest and the cashiers are SO friendly and quite frankly, I rarely have one speak to me or even smile here in the south. It also seems very "clannish" here and you need to know "the right people". I have had good experiences here, also. But I would not classify it as generally friendlier than the mid-west.
  6. I had considered Prentice Hall.... Oh Christine, your schedule is amazing. Do you mind if I copy it? Thanks
  7. Worst movie ever was "Solaris" with George Clooney. Sorry George!!! "Howard's End" is one of my all time favorite movies. Sorry to see someone put it on this list...... Guess we all have different tastes. I really have a hard time watching Ann Hathaway in movies..... In fact I just couldn't go to the new "Get Smart" movie because of that.
  8. What are you using for Earth science? My daughter needs 8th grade earth science next year and I'm at a loss. We believe evolution is poor science and feel we've done a pretty good job of teaching that to our children. Lately, it's been easier to adjust the secular texts, rather than adjust the "christian" ones.....but IDK. What have YOU used?
  9. We have used Sonlight sinces '95 with a couple of years off (TOG one year). We have also used Singapore Math K all the way through High School, but not with the same kid.....)
  10. Calvert has one. I did try to use it for one year of school and had difficulties with the computer disk(s) multiple times. But when it did work I thought it was pretty good. Maybe the CD's work better now, this was a couple years ago.
  11. WHICH Tennessee convention? The one in Nashville? Shelli
  12. Thanks Kelli, This was kind of what I thought. Now we have to actually "get through" Horizons 6! I'll holler at ya later, if I want to look at it.
