  1. 4 is average!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7+ kids is big
  2. :iagree: I am not perfect at it -- butttt I think respect is 1. what is said and 2. how it is said -- it is both parts
  3. I do think it is a calling for some, for others it is the best option they have for a certain time / at a certian time. If it a calling on a family, then i feel they need to , ought (ie moral obligation) to do so. If it is simply, logially, the best option at a certain point or time -- then it is potentially the best choice -- for that time -- but there is no moral necessaity. I do not think Homeschooling is best for everyone, at all times.
  4. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh that you -- that makes sense -- :)
  5. so for receptive year you would print both the "lesson plances" and the "copymasters" ?? that was my plan -- ? do i need to print the transparinites -- or are more for the classroom? then in year 1, print the lesson plans, the copy masters and the Pratice book -- all 3? I appercipate all teh help
  6. I ditched the sharpie to poker chip idea -- my first one -- as i wanted to ensure nice clear font. Momma handwritting is not so perfect. I found these -- http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/Hundred+Number+Tiles/004371/1301254864-1162511 I found some others, but they where "fiber board" and I think the plastic ones would stand up better in this house. I'd love wooden ones --
  7. looking at ways to work with DS1 on number identifying his numbers -- that is pairing the written 19 to the #19 in counting and also putting random number in correct order -- I jsut ordered flash cards of 1 to 100 I was thinking if i had poker chips with numbers on them it would be more "handy" more of a manuplitive to play with rather than flashcards; stand up to more, yk? I could make some but.....i was hopeing some one might know of something liek that -- smaller sturdy number tiles (0 to 100) -- don't have to be circles -- ....
  8. each of the youth may very well be very mature; espcailly at home, in routine and in interaction with known adults. my concern would be -- new place, vacation mentality, a little heady at getting to be adults all on their own and so on .... no safty net, no 'checking in' etc -- kids are still kids I'd say no -- better safe than sorry for the rest of his / your life
  9. i have a couple of titles -- i'll start a thread to make a list, i bet other moms can think of more titles: Kandoo Kangaroo Hops Into Homeschool - Susan Ratner
  10. thanks eveyone, this is making me feel really confident about my choice
  11. do you have any books where the kids (animals or human) homeschool -- there are so many "going to school" books and "mrs nelson's first grade ______" books -- i think it is vital for the kids to see home education as 'real' and not just 'not in school yet' --- some kids eat vegan, some eat meat, some go to school buildings, some school at home. maybe a few books, that just happen to be added to the family colllection where homeschooling is the norm??
  12. http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm MEP Math who has used it? I am 99% set on useing it for kindy for our main math. I am just unsure about the 'jumping in point', Is the Receptive Year where i should start, or year one? Did anyone have trouble useing it one on one at home, the note in the lesson plans are written for a classroom. I am planning to jsut start at the start and let him 'fly' for as far as he can, and then allow him to gradually slow as the material becomes more challangeing -- he has some talent for math, but i fear it is hit and miss and want to start at the start and just be sure we cover everything. I was planning to print it out, sections at a time and put it in a binder for use. what did you do? Thanks. Aimee
  13. :iagree: I will go a step more and say you can be respect of a child's feeling and thought without giving them any say in a decision. You can listen, discuss and in the end say "I understand, and I will _____ but I am the momma you schoo here."
  14. 5 year olds are small children, they have no concepts and no understanding. I do not think you need to 'sell being at home' or make a child 'want to be at home'. School is a choice given to the parents, not the children. You can clearly school at home in a manner that fits your child's style; but you are the parent. I try to make things my child have to dfo enjoyable -- go to the docotr, eat veggies, etc -- but i do not "sell it" -- it is what it is and I am the momma (and dad is the daddy) and that is our job. *shrug*
  15. I am you to a T -- and I'll tell you ...I looked at the test scores of our local school and said "well I can't do much worse than THAT" as for a reference pioint, DH and I have agreed to testing, either at Syvian or via the local school district or ____ after 2nd or 3rd (once we feel they are reading strongly and can 'test' accurately). if you search on - line there are endless scope and sequences, or benchmark lists or "critera" or _____ [insert term here] for each grade. I take a few (CA usally, our local state, and the world Book and Core KNowledge) and combine them to make our own 'goal list' (or i have for Kindy -- that is where we are) so i do look at standards differnt schools go by, and make our own.
  16. oh would it be fair to say after Dh gets me the ipod touch i won't really want / need a e-reader?
