  1. I agree, I guess I do not see what the problem that you are trying to nip is -- they knock, they ask nicely -- they are kids .. that is doing pretty good IMO. :) I don't see what the problem is -- kids are kids -- they are not being rude, distructive, mean or crude or .... frankly -- if people do not want to deal with other people -- go live on 33 acres , we do and i can't SEE the 'house next door' -- and it sucks -- i'd love to have the kids next door, nicely, knocking on the door daily --
  2. Thanks he 'writes messages" and he "makes books" and he loves to be read to --
  3. My older son is 5.5, he is not offically kindy age by law till fall. he is a SN kid -- SPD and speech and anxiety for sure, very emotionally immature too ... however he also tested out "very gifted" and "extreamly bright" when the PhD did a full set of tests with him (working on dx). She says that his SN + Gifted status as actually 'part of his problem' she made quite a point about how high some of his scores were (and how low a couple) ... so here is my question -- shuld i be doing anything special with him? Up to now we've not pushed academics and honestly do not want to push -- he is 5 he is a boy and he has enough other challanges. Our family believes in letting children be children. but he still can't count to 100 and messes up his ABCs when he sings them. (both annoying to me :001_huh:). so am i doing him a disservice by not presenting more academics? or should i give him another year or 2 to be a little silly boy before i require too much? just looking for some feed back on a 'very gifted child' that really doesn't come across as gifted at all  Aimee
  4. a bean bag? A big reading bean bag? or a speical ball chair for school use? or ... something that she can have at home they do not have in the classroom. a portable white board that she can decorate the frame of ....
  5. thanks, but it would still be the 3rd in the seris -- so a child, then, would have read 1 and 2 before 3 ... i can't wait to read the link
  6. I have a copy of the GcGruffy's Third Eclectic Reader. the copyright is 1879, 1896, 1907, 1920. would this be a 3rd grade level reader? Or it is the 3rd version of the Eletic reader (thus all being the same reading level this one just newer?)?
  7. ours is: We the parents have the moral and legal obligation to craft, mold, and guide our children into adulthood as functional, ethical, moral and productive people ready and willing to serve God’s Glory and to be productive members of their community and good men / fathers and husbands. Trustworthy, successful, and competent. Deuteronomy 6:7 “You shall diligently teach your children My words as you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.†We can, and should, use all resources available to us, such as the state school system, but the end result the responsibility is ours alone. The education of our children is our mandate from God who blessed us with the children, and to Him alone are we ultimately accountable, and to our grandchildren. This not a burden we can, or would choose to, hand off to any other individual or organization. It is wise to remember that Modern institutional education began only in the last 100 years in American and that this great country was founded through the efforts of those who were schooled at home or in one-room schools; at the time the norm and the expectation for all education. It is also important to remember that Home-educated students typically score 15-30% points above public-schooled students on standardized academic achievement tests. Our intent is for our children to excel when considered with their peers and it is our duty as parents to give them every means necessary to do so. While we are teaching our children to study, research, and write, we need to remember that they are establishing and perfecting tools that they will one day use to God’s glory. Both tools of knowledge and academic skill as well as tools of faith. Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.†Socialization: Young children are impressionable; we the parents are morally obligated to ensure that the models the children are impressed upon by are worthy. Children should not be expected to exercise sound judgment regarding actions and associations independently until they are of an age to be able to make such moral decisions. The family must be the most important circle for children till they reach the age of accountability and can be a motivational force within their peer group. You cannot effectively compensate for 30+ hours/week of a humanist worldview with a few hours at home when the child is already tired or emotionally done. The influence of the school system on young children is a very serious thing. It is very difficult, even impossible, to tell a child the MUST listen to an adult (teach or other) then to tell them NOT to listen / believe certain things that person says, or not to trust that adult or believe him / her on certain issues. That is an unfair situation to place a child in; and will effect child ability to learn anything in that situation. Goals of Education: <LI sizset="3" sizcache="10">Generally: To facilitate an education developing the ability to locate, understand and utilize needed information. To be a fully functional productive member of society that is able to think for ones self and make sound choices and demonstrate the ablity to reason and evaluate data and arguments. [*]Specifically To read well, critically, for comprehension and for joy. To be able to find and expertly use reading to gather needed information on any topic To learn to research and gather information and data confidently and quickly. While evaluating the gathered information for validity and relevance and “trustableâ€. To be a critical consumer of pop culture and the media. To evaluate bias and its effects data offered. Confidently express self well orally and in writing, present information clearly and persuasively when necessary Be able to successful use a variety of math skills in daily life and for complex reasoning. To be able to engage in complex reasoning and use advanced logic in life and professional / academic endeavors Enjoy Art and Music and Lit for its intrinsic beauty as well as understanding how it fits into history and expresses and reflects the time period of its creation, as well as how it makes God visible in our daily lives. To recognize and appreciate universal truths. Understand history and politics so as to be able to make critical choices and make sense of current events with the end of being a fully participatory member of the electorate and the body politic personally if necessary. To understand the scope of science to an extent that allows for an understanding of current event and the working of the world around us. Also to allow for recognition of and respect for God’s inherent design in all. To understand the human body, its form and functions and care. To make wise personal choices in lifestyle and personal behavior. To be an educated and wise consume of health care. To build a solid foundation in faith and the Word of God. Both as it speaks to our lives in matters of personal choice and faith, and also as Lit and History. To be aware of other world religions / schools of thought / faiths. With an eye towards being able to understand others, live tolerantly and to understand world history and politics and current events more completely. Other: No fear of bullies on the playground or being disgraced in front of our social group (class) when you struggle with a subject No opportunity to fly under the radar and get by with out truly accomplishing a task or learning information or skill Expectations Age / dev app – not sitting quiet all day at age 5 Achievement – higher personal goals, not dictated by the average of a class of 30 (or even 20) http://scribinglife.wordpress.com/education/family-education-mission-statment/ is the blog link -- the formatting looks a lot better there. :D
  8. it is for me!!!! finding summer print, summer / spring dressed is almost impossible
  9. little brother is 3.5. there have been immunity questions for a time ... finally getting tests and so on Current understanding: He has a Periodic / Persuasive Fever Syndrome. ENT 'offically' if casually tossed out there dx. i like ENT and do trust him after 2 years of contact. Infectious Dis doc has not said anything yet -- but there are several red flags in his lab tests. However that dx is just a classification (as I understand it) more of a descriptive term from what we know – random unexplained fevers that repeat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_fever_syndrome looks rather scary -- anyone BTDT? Aimee
  10. just spent last veek at 2 funeral Masses and 2 pray services, so this is on all of our minds. 1) Do you have an Advance Directive in place for your own end of life care? no put i did spell it out in my birth plans for both hospital births and give my OB a vritten doc signed stating my vishes and who was to make decsions. Dh and I need to re-do our will and advanced Directives will be done them. He know, and BFF know what i vant. 2) Who would you like to make decisions regarding your end of life care - a medical team, or those close to you (ie, your spouse, life partner, parents, children, siblings, religious advisor/pastor, etc)? Husband with advice of Mother if still alive and BFF. I think BFF shall be more rational if it is a emergency (say car vreck or something) because Dh does like his planning. I would like them to have honest medical advice, but i do not need a hosptial making choices for us. 3) Briefly state your age, family snapshot and whether you have any chronic health issues that affect your decisions (no details necessary, just trying to know whether or not you have a reason to have considered this issue before). I am pushing 40 (39) DH is 45. I have Clinical Depression, DH is a FELO. 2 boys 3 and 5 currently. Fam hisstory of parkenis on both sides of my family. ve have discussed this many many times, DH is a LEO BIL is a LEO -- and I have excating opionions about death and how all should be addressed.
  11. Many were innocent -- many in the south had no slaves and did not have 'a dog in the fight' untill the war came calling in their yards and homes. Nothing false about that not EVERY German was evil, not every Muslum is a terroist and there were indeed innocent Southerns. your quote above is the very 'to the victor goes the spoils' tone of history i want to avoid. The slave holders were at fault, yes, but not ever person that lived in the South was a hell bent rebell .... I am tired of the 'white christian man is evil'
  12. THANKS everyone this is really making me feel more like my thoughts are 'right on' -- flexible, short time, breaks and so on -- thanks so much, you ease a momma mind
  13. ITA -- I grew up in the South and the conflict was much more complex than most care to admit. there is a famous text of some union fighters running into a lone 'rebell'. he was young and poor and obviously not a slave owner and they asked him whyt he fought a looseing battle and he replied "because sir you are in my yard; what would you have me do" The North could have very well said "we do not want slaves" and gone on their own and left the South alone to do as it would... they did not. none the less this is not yet another tired debate about the war between the states, but the war between the states is a great example of the history being written by the victors. :D
  14. totally normal here, totally normal, sorry i did not even laugh :)
  15. this is it -- thanks so much -- trying to get a grip on what real people really do for say K to 4th (that is as long as DH is in agreement for the boys being home for now, 4th is a sure thing, after that it is up for discusiion) thansk so much -- i love seeing the nuts and bolts of how people are really covering stuff :D:D
  16. I looked up My Book House on amazon.com -- so is each 'book' a actually book -- incuding discussion about the book? (or no discussion) -- or are they selections from differnt books more antholgy like?
