  1. this honest, but sad, there are times with Big is really just "acting like gooph" -- i mean his sensory stufdf is out of control, he is wound and just can't seem to make a good choice or be liveble -- i have saidf in private to my BFF i know he is not stupid, i have the paperwork to prove it and that is keeping him alive today. bad momma
  2. our son has some noteable SN -- mostly emotional and slef-regulation -- we had a full assessment done on him, and part of that was time with a PhD (we all looove her) and not only mental health but IQ testing adn so other skills testing. She talked to us about it. "he is very gifted, and i suspect the test is artifcally low due to his speech issues" :001_huh: so that is how we 'know' but you'd NEVER guess it to see him :lol: you'd guess the other end of the bell curve. Hopeing as the SN stuff settles we can reach some of the gifted
  3. :iagree::iagree::iagree: I worked in shalters and was a foster mom -- CPS is there to protect the innocent CALL -- removing them fromt he home is teh LAST option, they try to get the family services and help first ....
  4. are you close enough to be active in any groups? or close enough to maybe meet someday -- ?? :)
  5. I am building on another thread i started: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=255200 cuz i am still unsure and 2nd guessing myself. back ground 1 my son is SN and while gifted is very emotionally lacking and tends towards silly and also anxiety. some days he is amazing and some days he is a big SILLY 2 yo. He is in therpy and OT. He has has ST since 20 months and is now, at 4 months past 5, "done" and his olny need now is to remember to slow down and use the skills he has. he is working with a theprist on anxiety and also 'self regulating". 2. This last year he has gone to classroom 3 hours 2 days a week. dule enrolled homeschool and Pre-school -- he was in classroom only to get his services. he did great and the teacher complained a coule of times she had to pull 1st grade level work (word families) in for him and no one else. 3. He is a Nov Birthday so not offically Kindy till fall. adn then at 5 (almost 6) he could maybe be put off another year till 6 almost 7. 4. we read a ton, do worksheets as he asks -- or i offer a maze or something as a activity to have something to offer. he can FLY though most of the "pre-school stuff" but lack, really lacks the fine motor skills and writing skills to go any place else, he can't honestly do a pre-school trace or maze page well. 5. he has tested in the gifted range. BUT you'd never know it -- he has no strong intrest (beyond superheors, but no collection of knowledge about them) and has yet to really 'do any" like start reading on his own at 3 or anything -- ok so I am looking at kindy for the fall and while we still do not feel it is time to push, we'd rather he be a kid and deal with his SN needs rather then fight each day about specific expecation of desk work. I plan to dual enroll to take advantage of some limited programs at school, so he'd have to start Kindy this fall. generally I'd not mind him vaiting a year but i do not want him to be a year behind his offical place. i am not sure DH would go for waiting a full year to enroll him, offically, in Kindy though DH says that all kindy should be in math and reading. So fall basically is gonna be phonics and math and being a kid. So i just feel kinda confused. I want him to be a kid, i do not want to push academic to the point of a battle -- but i do want to start him .... SO here is the actual question -- i am having a devil of a time getting a handle on what 'level' of stuff to get him. his skills are all over the place; in both the basics of phonics / reading and math. so how did you get a level to start? anyone btdt with a sn, yet techically gifted, kid. My fear is his mind is fast gonna take him to apoint his body can't keep up -- his therpist feels he is already there in general and that is a big root of a lot of his anxiety and stufggles to function. i am concerend that if we quickly hit a point his head can do but he can't "physically do" (write, manuplate, cut) that is only gonna make the SN issues worse -- because of the conflict. But i can't hold him back to "wait" on his fine motor and so on -- you know? should i just get the lowest level and let him 'fly' though the stuff that is old hat (some math i look at starts out with things like BIG vs LITTE) and then get to the grit when you hit it and then slow down? do you get the lowest level and page though and start him a little below where you think he is? ???? I am jsut not sure how to find a good starting place. and i am kida unsure what to do in general -- the SN vs the typical school stuff since his SN does not directly effect his academics.:confused1::banghead: thoughts?:bigear: __________________
  6. I am concerned about, like you say gaps. exampole -- his math is a gift, he can quote you math facts (5 +7 is 12 moma did you know that momma) butttttt he skips 14 in counting to 25 LOL. I want a really soild foundation so i don't "see" some of what he is doing and miss something else. i had LD issues, but I was also a mostly A student -- i learned young how to keep my mough shut if i did NOT know and be loud if i did -- it did not take too long so start to skate on the stuff i didn't know and that bit me later -- i do not want that to happen. OK he tests gifted, but he is still a little 5 yo boy -- you know. :) at this point i am not looking for a gifted curr really -- he'll excell as he does and we'll move forward in that (so he does 1st reading and 3rd math in 2nd grade offical, so be it). But i do want to be sure i am building him a good foundatin (and little brother too) for as 'high as he is able to build' thanks everyone

  8. cool does it do that (print both sides) on its own?? thanks everyone -- i am just not meant for this day and time when there are a zillion options on each and every choice LOL I need like 3 to choose from. I am going to that site later to get a smaller option list to choose from.
  9. ok I think it is time for us to get a laser printer. I like the fact i hear they are so much cheaper per-page printed. The math curr i want to use is free on-line but i am going to need to print it. The same for phonics. Also, let's face it, there are so many great e-books (i have a ton on this lap top already, free) free or cheap -- but again printing is necessary. I understand some laser printers are like 2 cents or so pre-printed page. but, i am not so smart at 'computer' stuff (or iphones and the like, but that is not relvant). I look on amazon and they all look more or less the same. :001_unsure: So how do i choose? I just need a good soild work horse -- nothing fancy -- too fancy tends to mean too complex for me to use :001_smile: I want one with cheaper ink refills and a lower price pre page Hower, and maybe this is a kink in it, i don't know, DH would like to be able to print photos -- not a lot (I order them in groups on-line) but some, and some 'color graphins;' for randoms cards and so on -- certianly not the bulk of the printing we do -- but DH likes the ablity to do it some. any words of wisdom on how to find a good one, how to 'choose' ....
  10. I am looking at starting kindy for Big Brother and am a bit (lot) confused on math. All the math options seems so differnt. ANyone used http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm Mathematics Enhancement Programme ? I am likeing it because 1. i have heard good things and 2. it is free soooo i feel able to start at the start, speed though the 'btdt' stuff for him and 'look for' his level and 3. if it is a flub, i spent no money :) any feed back on it? 2ndly -- he is really showing a gift for math, randomly doing bigger additon (8 +16) in his head and at all his SN testing the PhD working with him commented on a math apitude (I have none) ... but we've never "started at the start" and worked a program step by step. Personally I am planning to do just that -- to make sure i am not skipping anything and that I am building math correctly for him. if there any place, on line, maybe interactive, he can "play" and i can get a feel for his actual math level? or is her simply too young for that? Thanks Aimee
  11. on my wishlist actually -- I personally Love Geroge (oh the boys like him to, i guess, LOL)
  12. Thanks. He is doing handritting w/o tears at OT -- just one letter at a time -- and my intention is to hold off an any real push at handvritting formally for another 6 to 12 months untill he has the musle memory for holding the pencil and more control -- to prevent undue fustration that colors the rest of schooling or creats unnecessary battles. You are right though, i should consider bringing it home too -- at least for a time -- then switching to a 'prettier' habndwritting.
  13. i am going to read that site, thanks, i am intrested in reading more about the late 1800 to early 1900 norm vs today's grades -- can i find that there -- or can you point me in the right direction.
  14. my oldest son is tested iun the gifted range. he is also emotionally immature, might be ADD, has been speech delayed but is currently testing on level (for the first time ever). he is fine motor behind and core body strenght and 'body placement' is an issue for him (in OT). He also has SPD and anxiety issues. The PhD on his team is great and talks about him being trapped in his head and unable to go fast enough to do his head. he is offically kindy age, legally, in the fall. most of his peers have done kindy this year; not us. in general DH and i believe in a more delayed relaxed approach to formal adacimics at this stage -- not even 6 yet. but i see him on the cusp of reading and he is gifted in math, that is clear. I am feeling it is time to at the very least be more intentional in the oppertunities i provide him; but still struggle not to fustrate him or stress him given tasks (script, math that requiers peincil and paper) that are too hard for him physically (not smarts). I have done a blog post about my plans and i'd love to have any one read it and comment, or provide feedback here -- i have so few +BTDT+ classical ed moms to use as a sounding board. http://scribinglife.wordpress.com/2011/02/15/planning-kindergarten/ the entire 'plan' and http://scribinglife.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/kindergarten-%e2%80%93-the-plan-%e2%80%93-again-%e2%80%93-more-fleshed-out-core-only/ -- discussing the core subjects. i am sorry -- i just bneed some feed back ... Aimee
  15. I am sure this has been asked so many times, so many times .. but can any BTDT moms give me some thoughts on phonics / teaching read -- no handwritting. My son, turned in Nov and we have held off on "school" and intend to keep holding off, for the most part, but do want to start more phonics. He knows all his letters and basic sounds and can id them 'back and forth' (that is the sound to the letter and the letter to the sound' He has some SN issues and is in OT and his fine motor is behind so we'd rahter aovid the writting if we can. Thanks Aimee
  16. I can speak from personal expereince. I do not want to enter any debates about what to call things, or the why behind things ... however, i can just tell you about me personally: I was reading on a high school level by 2nd grade and college by 4th. (love the standard test took each year) However, my spelling and math skills have always been way behind. flipping letters in handwritting was the first thing, and flipping numbers. Honestly, to this day, spelling and math are a "low" skill for me, i know at one point in highschool my spelling was rat ed at a gradeschool level. I still have to THINK very hard to make all my letters correctly. reading has always been very simply to me, whereas spelling / handwritting / math has always been a great struggle. I can't give you a why -- I can, if you want, share some of my tricks and things i have personally learned. But yes, it is possible read very very well and still really stuggle with spelling / handwritting and math. Aimee
