  1. I think another poster wrote that she does just want to spend time with you...whatever you want, she wants to do because she absolutely idolizes you and you are teaching her how to be a human. She wants to please you. Have you ever heard this saying? At 5, they are the master and you are the slave because you do everything for them At 10, they are the slave and you are the master - they'll do everything you ask At 15 they choose to be friend or foe depending on how you handled those childhood years. Right now, in regards to this situation, consider yourself as the master. It comes around. It really does. The frustration that's inflicted now will come back when she is 15.
  2. Fun only to you maybe, eh? What about her? What's fun to her? Has she been waiting 2 1/2 years to have fun too? ;) My 2yo dd loves to make circles and lines on the chalkboard, color in her coloring book...but she also has fun with bubbles, bug watching, running, chasing, tea parties, watering her pool, fingerpainting, cooking...
  3. Wow. Her behavior is completely normal. From reading through the thread, it seems your expectations might be a bit high and a little overwhelming. Is she your first and only child? I highly recommend David Elkind's Miseducation: Preschoolers at Risk. It might put things in a greater perspective for you and give you a glimpse at the future issues you are concerned with. Or perhaps any of the Moore's books.
  4. In some parts of the world there is no difference between what is served for breakfast-lunch-dinner. Anything that you'd eat for a meal, would be fine for breakfast too. There are some great ideas here already, here are a few more: brown rice tuna fish salad chicken strips and country gravy sausage biscuits grilled cheese on gluten-free bread
  5. I think "yeah" and can be pronounced either: yeah, right or yeah, yippee. However that was back in the 80s...Now to avoid confusion with online boards, emails, etc. I use "yay" because then there is no doubt what I'm trying to say :D
  6. Awesome! Thanks for all the replies. I did B, but then felt bad because I didn't have time to chat with anyone else, especially the woman I hadn't seen in awhile. It was a new group, so she didn't know any one either, but she has been to other homeschool meetings. Everything has worked out fine now though! So thanks again for the input :) I feel better and validated.
  7.   :( :cursing: Holy crappola! I have never...I'm soooo sorry mama! :grouphug: The things I'd say are not fit for children's ears. Wow. I'm stunned. That really sucks!
  8. Please help me with this one. The other night I had went to a meeting and only had an hour to attend. I think I might have made the wrong social and etiquette decision, but not sure... What is the proper etiquette when a new group of homeschool moms are meeting each other for a first gathering and you know some of the people, but not all? Do you: A) Hang out with the mom you haven't seen in awhile, but were at one time good friends with, but grew apart as your kids got older, but now are back on the same path and you'd love to reconnect B) Hang out with the new mom that is obviously nervous and knows no one else and it's her first homeschool meeting C) Hang out with the ladies you've met once or twice before just to get to know them better And yes, there were introductions and general chit-chat before one of the 3 choices have to be made. :bigear:
  9. From what I remember... Tampax brand elongate as they saturate, which does cause cramping with some girls and women because it pushes against the cervix. Playtex brand blossom out, kind of like a parachute. OB brand parachute out, however there is no applicator. Not sure about other brands, but the way the tampons expand when they saturate might make a huge difference in comfort. Another poster suggested buying several types...if you do, just throw one of each in some water and you can see how it expands.
  10. My only thought would be the ride home....wouldn't he be exhausted? Unless he's used to that much physical exertion.
  11. FB got too annoying and impersonal for me. I actually did delete my FB account because I was spending too much time out of touch with my IRL friends. Weird, I know since FB is suppose to keep people in touch. lol! Anyway I also have noticed that some people will intentionally do the things the OP was discussing to other FB friends. I'm not really sure why though. Sometimes it's even rude comments passive aggressively posted in a status update targeted at some one else.
  12. No pun. I knew what you meant, but in light of the thread, "sniff" cracked me up! Thanks for the laugh! :D
  13. dealoz.com It is a search engine that searches for the best prices on a particular book, offers other editions, etc. I've found that the cheapest books are actually on abebooks.com
  14. ditto to that. We are using OB and it seems rushed and discombobulated. I just don't understand how they are suppose to concentrate on a skill Level 1 and a skill Level 2 assignment for the same paper. Then to have to read the Core book with them...seems silly that the student needs to read that just to do the assignment. Also, the grammar lessons are driving me crazy. I need to use 2 other grammar books before starting the CW lesson because the Harvey's lesson doesn't coincide with the grammar concept being taught in CW. And of course I'm having an issue with scheduling. The IG doesn't help figure out how to schedule. It seems pretty generic, and doesn't look to cover the actual lesson for the week. We are going to stick with it for a bit longer, I was just wondering if the straight Homer levels A & B made more sense, were smoother in transitioning from the lessons and skill level, and if the IG was more helpful than the OB. Thanks!
  15. With Theon, I told ds that it was the 5 W's (plus 1 H). He's familiar with that. I think it's easier to understand and remember because we have 5 fingers and they are on one (H) hand. lol! 5 W's - Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How So, how has regular Homer been easier? Is it because the IG is better or is it just a slower pace? Yeah, I might pull out my shiny copy of WTM and see what the other middle school writing suggestions are other than R&S. But I like the IDEA of CW soooo very much. It'd just me nice if it was easier to use, not necessarily easier in context.
  16. lol! I want to sub on your post because we're at the same point in OB. We finished week 5 last week and it was the biggest pain in the rear. I also consider myself experienced and just don't understand why it's so complicated. Even the directions seem to be run around in circles, why can't they just get to the point? I might just get regular Homer A plus IG to see if the information makes any more sense.
  17. I read both editions and then the article on-line about 2 history tracks. After much consideration, we have 3 history tracks and my ds has no problem and actually prefers it this way. For 7th grade ds studies Classical history (Rome), Modern World history (1920-1960), and American/US history (1600's) every week. For your younger kiddo, I'd vote do the one track because it is so much more fun, especially with the SOTW guide :D
  18. I think it is possible for 7th grade. My son read through the first 2 in the series in less than 6 months. He doesn't do the labs though. And we do most the questions orally. Right now he is slowing going through Zoology 3, but only because we've focused on other things and I don't really like this one as much as the other two. There seems to be a lot more differences in our personal beliefs. :tongue_smilie: HTH!
  19. We are struggling through CW Homer for Older Beginners - currently on week 5. My ds hating it and not getting it and I'm not really understanding what he is suppose to be learning either. I've been completely butchering it every week to try and make it work, but I might as well have written a program for the amount of time I've put into it. lol! Honestly the TM for CW OB doesn't really help very much with scheduling or implementing. I'm finding myself getting frustrated with having to spend so much time just to use the OB level. I'm wondering if CW Homer regular, book A & B would be slower and better. I like the idea of CW so much though, so I'm hoping that regular Homer would be smoother for ds and easier to schedule. By chance, does any one have an opinion? Thanks!
  20. That's a fantastic find! We like to hatch them because we normally don't have any butterflies in our area. With the snow and altitude here, there isn't much chance of finding them anywhere except through the internet. Just yesterday we woke up with 3" on snow on the ground...
  21. Not sure which board to post this one. We have the Insect Lore butterfly net-house thing for the caterpillars to hatch and we've done it every year, however since the move, I can't seem to find our caterpillar vendor information. Does any one know the best place with the lowest price to get the eggs & food for the Painted Lady Butterflies to hatch in the net-house thing? Maybe it's cheaper to just buy a new kit from Amazon? Thanks a bunch!
  22. Another AO lover here. :D Definitely consider starting with Y1. Years are not grade level. My son is an excellent reader and he's reading a few titles from Y4 & Y5 and they are very intense, literature wise. And keep in mind that AO follows the CM method. It makes it better if you familiarize yourself with Charlotte Mason. If not, then AO turns into just another reading list that has a schedule.
  23. Sonlight is definitely easier for scheduling. It has it laid out for you, day by day. It was perfect for us when I was pregnant, then with her as a newborn. Absolutely minimal thinking, just pull out the IG and it states exactly what needs to be done. I'm pretty sure with HoD you do have to do some scheduling maintenance to figure out what you're going to do...at least DITHOR you had to make some decisions on scheduling and book selections to set up your schedule and then go from there.
