  1. Ds is taking Derek Owens Honors Comp Sci and AB Calculus.

He has always been a really strong math student, but says he is having trouble grasping the material.  I have never taken comp sci, and I took calculus over 25 years ago.  It all looks foreign to me.

Are there any resources I could get to help him master these subjects? I really feel this is important as I want him to be prepared to help himself if he’s having trouble with a subject while away at college.

I have already had him e-mail his professors to see what they recommend, but I’d also like to get some other resources if you know of any.

Should I watch the videos and see if I can help him or is it better for him to work thru it on his own?  I don’t have the time, but do I need to MAKE time for it?

I’m planning to take him to the library on Saturdays to work on this and any other trouble spots once his DE start.  Just want him to have a good foundation for college. (He’s planning to major in business.)

    Thanks!

  2. DS took 2 community college courses this fall.  He got a 95 in composition, but he really struggled in economics.  His test scores were all in the 70s (typically right at the class average).  He is hoping that with a 100 for participation, a group project, and 5 points of extra credit added to final grade, he will end up with a B in the class.

He did read and take notes on each chapter before class, and he completed the study guide for each test.  The tests were multiple choice so I’m not sure why he struggled.

He is taking comp 2, government, and chem for non science majors next semester.  We’re planning to go to the library on Saturdays to work on study skills.      How can I help him?

It will be very important that he knows how to study and make A’s because he has some college scholarships that will require a certain GPA to maintain.

  3. It took ds forever to write the supplements, many of which were just a few paragraphs. I honestly think it’s because he doesn’t have any concrete goals or deep thoughts to share so it was taxing his brain to come up with things to say.  Haha!  Anyway, I am SO glad he’s done.

Thankfully, he should only have to do one interview, and that’s only IF he gets a shot at a scholarship he applied for.  I hope he gets a shot.  If so, we’ll do a lot of practice/coaching.

    Woot--congratulations!!

That's my goal for the weekend (FAFSA is finished, but the CSS profile is so intimidating).

Don’t worry. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.  As long as ypu have your tax statement in front of you and the balances of bank accounts, investment accounts, etc., it is fairly simple.

  5. @RootAnn, of course I’ll still chat with you all!  So funny how I didn’t want to talk to dh and ds about anything but college for so long, and now I’m just done.  Haha!

Dh and I both met at and graduated from UTD, and we both had a wonderful experience.  The campus was SO much smaller then.  There had only been a few freshman classes at that time.  But the school has invested a lot in the campus and the dorms.  My son loved it.  And the scholarships they give out are hard to beat.

  6. Just completed the FAFSA and CSS profile!

I had delegated the FAFSA to dh so I could have a break, but he asked me for answers to most of the questions anyway and submitted it with a mistake so I had to go back and amend it.  I called one of the schools, and they will get the updated FAFSA, but said we'd probably be selected for verification.  I should have just done it myself!

Anyway, back to the good news...  FAFSA and CSS are DONE!

Ds finished the last of the scholarship apps that are due this fall. So many essays!  Only 2 scholarship apps left to do, but they don't open until January, so I think we are done until then!

So tired and truly over it all.  Hoping and praying for good results with scholarships!

Oh, and dh took ds to a day long visit at U of Texas at Dallas, and surprisingly, ds LOVED it!!!  He said he liked the atmosphere and the diversity on campus, and said he can see himself there.  This school is his safety, y'all.  *happy dance*  He already received enough scholarship money for us to afford it if he lives at home, and he has applied for a few more scholarships there that he seems to have the stats for.  So there's a good chance he'll be able to live on campus.  YAY!!!  So thankful!

    Still tired, though.  LOL!

Told my family I don't want to hear the word college again until all financials are in, and it's time to make a decision.
