Just put the Humongous Book of Calculus on hold at the library. Hope it helps!
-
Ds is taking Derek Owens Honors Comp Sci and AB Calculus.
He has always been a really strong math student, but says he is having trouble grasping the material. I have never taken comp sci, and I took calculus over 25 years ago. It all looks foreign to me.
Are there any resources I could get to help him master these subjects? I really feel this is important as I want him to be prepared to help himself if he’s having trouble with a subject while away at college.
I have already had him e-mail his professors to see what they recommend, but I’d also like to get some other resources if you know of any.
Should I watch the videos and see if I can help him or is it better for him to work thru it on his own? I don’t have the time, but do I need to MAKE time for it?
I’m planning to take him to the library on Saturdays to work on this and any other trouble spots once his DE start. Just want him to have a good foundation for college. (He’s planning to major in business.)
Thanks!

@MerryAtHope Slow and steady wins the race. That’s something I have to keep reminding myself of as I am a hare by nature...
Sounds like your kids are doing great!
Congrats @Lori D.! I hope your ds has a great semester.

@Pen, I think it is an excellent idea. I tried to convince him to go to the professor before the final, but he didn’t want to. I will see if I can talk him into it. Reaching out to professors is also a skill he needs to master before leaving home.

I think it is the deeper understanding from the text that is missing. Probably also the class notes. I’ll work with him on those things. Thanks!

University of Arkansas at Fayettville has some full ride competitive scholarships called “fellowships” that he could qualify for with a 1450 SAT.

@RootAnn That thread sounds like it will be helpful. I will take a look.
@HeighHo He wasn’t able to bring his tests home, unfortunately. I tried to help him pinpoint the issue, but wasn’t able to. I wish I would have given him more tests at home. Hopefully, he will pick up the skill before heading off to school.

DS took 2 community college courses this fall. He got a 95 in composition, but he really struggled in economics. His test scores were all in the 70s (typically right at the class average). He is hoping that with a 100 for participation, a group project, and 5 points of extra credit added to final grade, he will end up with a B in the class.
He did read and take notes on each chapter before class, and he completed the study guide for each test. The tests were multiple choice so I’m not sure why he struggled.
He is taking comp 2, government, and chem for non science majors next semester. We’re planning to go to the library on Saturdays to work on study skills. How can I help him?
It will be very important that he knows how to study and make A’s because he has some college scholarships that will require a certain GPA to maintain.

DS accepted to Southern Methodist University with a $25,000/yr Distinguished Scholar Award.
Edit: Oops! Too many zeros. Haha!

That’s great, Lori!
So if all of your ds’ gen eds transfer, will he have 101 hours completed for the degree, or will he have 101 hours remaining?

Ds was accepted to the University of Houston.

It took ds forever to write the supplements, many of which were just a few paragraphs. I honestly think it’s because he doesn’t have any concrete goals or deep thoughts to share so it was taxing his brain to come up with things to say. Haha! Anyway, I am SO glad he’s done.
Thankfully, he should only have to do one interview, and that’s only IF he gets a shot at a scholarship he applied for. I hope he gets a shot. If so, we’ll do a lot of practice/coaching.

I only used A Beka Phonics 2 with my struggling reader. With the others, we stopped after either phonics K or phonics 1. I stop teaching phonics once rhey are reading fluently.

Ds received a JSOM Freshman Excellence Scholarship from UTD!
It gives him enough to be able to live on campus!!!

Oh goodness! I don’t think mine had the question about the cars. We only needed it for one school, thankfully!

Woot--congratulations!!
That's my goal for the weekend (FAFSA is finished, but the CSS profile is so intimidating).
Don’t worry. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. As long as ypu have your tax statement in front of you and the balances of bank accounts, investment accounts, etc., it is fairly simple.

@RootAnn, of course I’ll still chat with you all! So funny how I didn’t want to talk to dh and ds about anything but college for so long, and now I’m just done. Haha!
Dh and I both met at and graduated from UTD, and we both had a wonderful experience. The campus was SO much smaller then. There had only been a few freshman classes at that time. But the school has invested a lot in the campus and the dorms. My son loved it. And the scholarships they give out are hard to beat.

I don’t know what is going on with my phone and the crazy posts! Sorry!!!

Just completed the FAFSA and CSS profile!
I had delegated the FAFSA to dh so I could have a break, but he asked me for answers to most of the questions anyway and submitted it with a mistake so I had to go back and amend it. I called one of the schools, and they will get the updated FAFSA, but said we'd probably be selected for verification. I should have just done it myself!
Anyway, back to the good news... FAFSA and CSS are DONE!
Ds finished the last of the scholarship apps that are due this fall. So many essays! Only 2 scholarship apps left to do, but they don't open until January, so I think we are done until then!
So tired and truly over it all. Hoping and praying for good results with scholarships!
Oh, and dh took ds to a day long visit at U of Texas at Dallas, and surprisingly, ds LOVED it!!! He said he liked the atmosphere and the diversity on campus, and said he can see himself there. This school is his safety, y'all. *happy dance* He already received enough scholarship money for us to afford it if he lives at home, and he has applied for a few more scholarships there that he seems to have the stats for. So there's a good chance he'll be able to live on campus. YAY!!! So thankful!
Still tired, though. LOL!
Told my family I don't want to hear the word college again until all financials are in, and it's time to make a decision.

SAT Math - pretty bad situation - UPDATE #2

I think PWN the SAT is for those already scoring in the 600s who want to go higher.
For a print book, maybe College Panda Math SAT prep. College Panda also has a book of math practice problems.
