  1. I have heard it mentioned here that some teen boys “divorce” their mothers.  What does that look like, and what is a mom to do when this happens?

My 17 yo is a senior this year and seems...  different.  We used to talk all the time about everything.  Now, he doesn’t talk unless I ask questions, and I get one word answers.

He was never a super ambitious student, but always managed to get everything done.  But, he has a couple of months of work left from 2 subjects he started late last year, and I’m having to strong arm him into finishing it so we can start the new school year.  Hard to explain, but he is just so resistant about simple things.

I don’t think he’s depressed or anything.  He’s fine with his dad and siblings.  He went to 3 academic summer camps this year where he lived on campus for a week and said he really enjoyed them.  There have been some changes - his longtime friend group is slowly growing apart, and he’s not planning to play competitive bball for the first time since elementary school.  He finished up co-op last year and is going to do some dual credit this year.

I know it is a lot, but I just wonder if there isn’t a mom divorce happening.  I have been really frustrated and feeling like I can’t wait for him to leave home.  I just feel like I am spending so much energy on him instead of my younger kids.  It is such a downer after so many happy homeschooling years.

Wondering how other moms have dealt with this...
