  1. I took it slow as well, I wanted to internalize every word. I will definitely re-read it.
  2. Yeah, I never said I got a BA to sell books, but that seems to be the idea people got. It's not really what I intended this thread to be about, but I personally want to teach at the university level, or perhaps at a private high school. (An MFA in writing is a terminal degree.) I only mentioned my major because obviously I was not thinking of financial security when I chose it. It's common knowledge you don't need a degree to sell a book, but I would argue making connections in a good MFA program could make a difference. The whole "who you know" thing. Is it worth $60k to meet the right people? That's debatable.
  3. Yes, this is a complex question, and I understand it's not 100% either/or. I'm more opening up a discussion with a very general question.
  4. Definitely on our radar, I'm hoping to be able to go next year. :)
  5. I understand that. We are middle class with not much disposable income. I guess a more specific question would be, should one only get a degree that will help them make a specific (high) salary? I think one could argue that any degree can help one gain employment. However, certain degrees will put you in a certain earning category. It seems there is a push to only get a degree in a top earning field. (I.e. stay far away from the Humanities.)
  6. Well we are having problems in that aspect as well, so perhaps I'm just looking for answers in the wrong places. Unfortunately we won't get to find out if it's beneficial or not.
  7. Monopoly jr! We played it so much that my 5 year olds are now ruthless Monopoly moguls.
  8. Personally, I don't only see it as a means to a career. Yes, it can be that, but I really see it as helping a person be a well rounded individual, something to open and nourish the mind. For me, the future earning power of a degree is secondary.
  9. (in your opinion.) There was a recent thread about majoring in Creative Writing, or English, and many posters felt it wasn't smart because of the job prospects. So, is college only a means to a career in your opinion, or something else? ETA: Removed thread derailment.
  10. I couldn't get the bullet journal to work for me, as much as I wanted to. I need the future layed out.
  11. I know I sound bitter, I apologize. It's just frustrating for those of us right below cut off. DS missed it by 3 points at age 4, so we decided to wait until he as 7 to retest, and then he missed it by 1. Maybe he isn't PG (by their standards) but I still feel the social aspect would be very beneficial to him. (We don't really need help educationally at this point.)
  12. Well, I wish the cutoff wasn't so hard and fast. I get it, but seriously, 1 point? It really turns me off of the organization. (In their defense, I didn't apply, so I don't know for sure that they wouldn't accept him, but from what I've read, it sounds like that's most likely what would happen.) Testing is expensive, and some kids don't test well. It makes me sad that those resources are only available based on strict test scores.
  13. I just finished Between the World and Me. I will need a few days to formulate my thoughts, but I highly recommend it!
  14. I've not heard from anyone that it's been life changing, which is why I'm hesitant to do any more testing. I'm sure it can be useful, but the only reason I'd like for DS to be accepted is the social aspect. I'll just have to keep being creative on that front!
  15. Thank you! I will start with consider this and then reevaluate. I just really have no interest in reading multiple books on the subject when I have so many other books I want to read more.
  16. I just stole this from the FB bravewriter group, but it's such a good fit, I'm allowing myself to plagiarize it. ;) PLAYFUL things have been serious in my life for the past couple of years due to family issues. I really want to lighten up, and also approach homeschooling this year with a playful attitude. Actually my parenting in general could use more playfulness!
  17. I get it. I do believe in following your passion, and feel like college isn't always a means to an end, so that colors my opinions on the matter. :)
  18. I used to be a total mascara snob. I used diorshow for years and years, then I switched to tarte for about a year. I forgot mascara when we went on vacation, and ended up with a maybelline yellow tube mascara. I love it just as much as diorshow and I can afford to change it out more often which is really the secret to good mascara application. For pencils I like the cheap Sephora $5 pencils.
  19. I bought this one in the fall, https://riflepaperco.com/2016-birch-floral-everyday-planner/
  20. This just came up on my FB feed. I of course thought of this thread! http://domino.com/how-to-not-be-sad-when-you-take-the-tree-down
  21. Yes, as an entry. Thank you for understanding what I meant!
