  1. Would anyone like to help me figure out a math curriculum? I am looking mostly at Singapore and MUS. I'll probably get the k materials and run through them, I was originally going to go with first grade, but I gave my ds the Singapore placement test for 1A and he was all over the place. He can figure out addition, but there were a lot he wasn't sure how to approach. He got some of the word problems, but virtually none of the math "sentences." are the k curriculums really basic? I think he is an auditory learner, he didn't do well last year at Montessori with the golden bead work, he is more abstract in his thinking. Did I just talk myself out of MUS? Lol. So far my plan is to do hwt, the k level, a math, and maybe a LA or grammar program. Can anyone explain five in a row to me? It looks interesting, but I am not sure if ds will re read the same book for a week, he hates repetition. I appreciate the help and guidance!
  2. Do you use the grade your child is in in most subjects, or the grade his age states? I only ask because I'm going to start k this year, but it's looking like we will be using lots of first grade materials. DS is a nov birthday, so he misses the cut off for k this year, he is supposed to start fall 2012. I don't need to notify until next year, so should I say k next year, or first? I have year to figure this out, just wondering what everyone else does!
  3. That's crazy! I have been hanging out on the davidson forum, and for the wisc, it seems like right around 6 is the best time to take it if you need a high score, but 7-9 is better for accuracy. (supposedly iq is more stable at that point.)
  4. Thanks again for the great tips! This is all very helpful.
  5. Thanks for the great tips! When you guys talk about cheap work books, are you talking about the kumon type books you can find at target or barnes and noble? Or is there somewhere online I should be looking? Thanks again for the help!
  6. I am a little overwhelmed trying to figure out a starting point for my DS this fall. He will be 5 in November. I will probably just do a lot of reading with him for next year, but I would like to at least figure out a starting point for math as well. Should I just start with kindergarten materials? He took the WJ-III in November, and was normed as a first grader because his scores were too high to norm him as a kindergartener. (I guess this is common with early readers, once he is a little older, the reading won't be as out there as it is now.). He was mid first grade for math, and 3rd grade for reading (decoding & word recognition) 2nd grade for comprehension. I'm not sure how well these grade equivalents match up to real world grades, so I'm very confused.
  7. Thank you! This forum has been very encouraging. I'm starting to feel a tiny bit confident. :tongue_smilie:
  8. Sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm having a hard time understanding what any of these are. my DS will just be in k this year, so I'm sure I don't need anything like this for a while, but I see these mentioned on here and on the davidson forums, and I just can't figure it out. :001_huh:
  9. I'm working my way through WTM right now. :001_smile: thanks for the tips and thank you to everyone for the votes of confidence!
  10. Thanks for the tips! I have been reading WTM, I find it fascinating! I was thinking that I would keep it low-key next year, since he technically has a year before the state wants him in k. We can try out a few things and find out what works. Then, if it's a complete disaster, I'll send him to k the next year, no harm done. He took the WJ-III in the fall, and was normed as a first grader, mostly testing i to 2nd or3rd for the GEs, so I may jump right into first grade, and do lots of music classes. Do most people skip around, using different grades for different subjects? I'm guessing that's pretty standard.... I also worry about when I am no longer smarter than him, which looks like it will be sooner rather than later.
  11. I am currently a SAHM to my 4.5 year old DS and twins who are almost 11 months. I'm researching homeschooling for my DS who is 4.5. He is accepted into a gifted school for K next year, but there are a few major things that DH and I do not like about the school, so it's looking like our other option is homeschooling. (They have large class sizes, and my DS suffers from multiple food allergies and we are not satisfied as of yet with their policies regarding that. Also, it's all day K, and he is early enrolling, not really supposed to start until fall 2012.) I'm in the process of reading through all of the old threads in this forum, and the k-8 forum. I'm mostly intrigued and excited about HS, but also a little, "AAAAAH! Can I really DO this?" I just thought I would introduce myself!
