  1. There isn't a composition component is why I was thinking it wouldn't count. I guess I could assign him something. Maybe I could use it in conjunction with a writing class? I am also super confused about foreign language as electives or not so I can't say I really have a full grasp of any of this. 😬
  2. This looks so good! homeschooling high school is so expensive
  3. Yes, low output is fine, he has a pretty heavy schedule. He's also considering taking the NACLO exam if it's available.
  4. My kids' teacher had the big Joe ones at school and they loved them.
  5. we have 5 needing desks plus an art table. We need another laptop for sure. I wish we had a space for the Kallax set up but we don’t have a dedicated school room. thanks for the advice! Off to look at bean bags headphones and laptops
  6. that’s my 13 year old too. I bought him a $7 desk lamp and called it complete for the year. i think it’s mostly the books and curricula. We do still have a robust supply of art materials too. I have a couple of ikea carts and a built in cabinet that I can use. I’ve been looking for bean bag chairs but it seems they are a hot covid quar item. I may splurge and get a couple PB teen ones.
  7. Every thing on Pinterest and Instagram is for little kids. I need some ideas how to organize and put together a small space for two middlers and a high schooler! anyone care to share?
  8. I would love to hear from anyone who has included these in their high schooler's studies. I'm specifically looking at "Crafting the Essay" in preparation for CTY AP English. Any thoughts on whether the classes were worth the money, if your student liked them, etc? TIA!

  10. We are! I just started planning, we are doing a lot of subjects as semesters because of our schedule so we may not start Bio until January. In the Secular Academic FB group there was a suggestion to use this with Labpaq but I haven't fully decided yet. I bought the Macaw version. ETA: Does everyone buy the Teacher's Edition? I admittedly haven't researched this too much yet since we aren't starting now. ETAA: https://thecrashcourse.com/courses/biology?fbclid=IwAR3rWymEt-Z_ZieVm3a9b31OXJXO7k26bhN-rz54Q8_1-GC4-L9ve8-Hy4U We'll be doing this crash course with his younger sibs just because it's fun.
  11. Well I am now.I think it looks really good for my 9th grader. I think the question of how to nurture a natural writer is tricky. Personally, I might choose the units you think she needs work in and then the other ones just let her write and edit. I'm obviously no expert, my oldest is just starting high school, but I did major in Creative Writing. I think it is important to study the weak areas and also practice editing. Thank you for sharing, for us, this is just what we need!
  12. This may not help at all but I'm roughly planning a Social Justice Humanities type course. These are the resources I'm using. There may be something in there for you to add. 🙂 https://trello.com/b/B3VdyDHl/high-school-social-justice-humanities-resources
  13. Is it reasonable to count Linguistics as an English credit? My DS is taking Intro to Linguistics through Online G3 this semester and I originally had it placed as an elective, but then started thinking I could maybe put it towards his English requirements? He is solidly on the college prep track if that helps. TIA!
  14. Yes! My oldest read those with BYL year 8. They are great.
  15. Wait, what classes are you looking at? 🤣 seriously though, I get that they are expensive, like I said I am rethinking the more expensive one because I'm not sure I need it. (I don't think I do)
  16. I don't have full OG, just the 3 day Wilson Intro. I am not for sure that I'm taking the Roots Entwined class because it's how to use copy work and dictation and I feel like I can figure that out on my own. I did sign up for phonics and spelling because in my mind plugging the phonics holes is more pressing than the writing piece.
  17. I wanted to come back and update after may talk with Rita from Rooted in Language. I paid for an hour of parent coaching and I really felt like it was worth the time and money. I'm going to take a couple of their parent classes, Phonics & Spelling the Roots Entwined class which will help with the flow of writing. It's on copyworb and dictation and how to break it down for dyslexia. She wasn't that impressed with what our tutor is doing so that made me feel better about going it on our own when the school year starts. I'm going to go through Wilson books 5&6 with some parts of 8&9 for the vowel teams and r controlled words. After that my gut is that she will be on more solid ground to move on to something like Sequential Spelling or Apples & Pears and we can continue to work on writing. I also will use some of the Rooted products to supplement. (Sticky stories and Word Study.) I also bought two of the vision workbooks from RFWP, I'm not sure how those are going to fit in yet, but I do plan on using them. So anyways, it wasn't an "here's the curriculum you can use and get the results you need" answer, but of course it's not. Long story short, we are going to plug the phonics holes and then move on to writing.
  18. Coming back to share some holiday gift guides I found after reading this thread! https://coolmompicks.com/2019-holiday-gift-guide/cool-gifts-for-kids-under-15-dollars-2019/ https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/gift-ideas/g203/gifts-for-kids/
  19. I haven’t made one in a while but from what I remember you can make them by hashtag so maybe hashtag the year? Although you probably need more than a book a year if you have that many photos.
  20. I like her account a lot! the ones I did I left the text off and I just did 6x6 soft cover to see if I liked them.
  21. No but I should! In the past when I’ve started early I’ve ended up buying more, but I think this year is different. Shipping time alone is reason to get started. I’m in school and my semester ends 12/12 so that in and of itself is reason to get it done early! any ideas what to get 2 10 year olds and a 14 year old? 🧐
  22. For phone pics I like chat books! I make them through Instagram but I believe you can just upload them directly from your phone
