  1. Tonight's show was fabulous!! And the uhhh..."TWIST" at the end - HOLY CRAP! Did NOT see that coming...
  2. I can't really help much with the other ones, but we are REALLY liking Growing with Grammar so far. DS has no qualms about worksheets and actually looks forward to doing WWW and GWG each day. I think since the lessons are nice and short, it really helps...and the gradual progression has been great so far. I am actually kicking myself for not going ahead and ordering Soaring with Spelling & Vocabulary too...(although I might this month). The price can't be beat either...
  3. Totally - but I am not planning to stick to a 4 year cycle either. History is probably one area where I don't plan to really stick to the WTM recommendations...I am sure someone who is sticking to it would say NO, they wouldn't deviate. We personally prefer doing Unit Studies for History and LOVE it that way so far!
  4. :iagree: We love Singapore Primary but hated Earlybird...I hate that I didn't just go straight to 1A when we were starting last year...
  5. Have you looked at Growing with Grammar? Esp. since you said she likes worksheets...
  6. I totally *would* if I planned to do dissections :) My DS would have loved it even a year or so ago. The closest we've come to anything like that is owl pellets though :) I just can't handle doing animal dissections...I had the heebie jeebies when I did it in school and have no plans to go through it again, ROFL!!! But long story short, YES, I would do them with a 4-5 year old (mine anyway since I know he could handle it) if I actually did them ;)
  7. LOL - or it could be that the window was left open and if her kids are anything like MY 6 year old, they thought it was funny to put up a new post, LOL!! I've thankfully not had him leave posts anywhere, but have had him have conversations with my mom and others on Yahoo Messenger  and they look just like that ;) :tongue_smilie:
  8. How are you?! I haven't seen you posting much lately and I am used to seeing lots from you!!

  9. Thanks everyone! I am really glad to hear that it's common...I was really concerned that I SHOULD be having to teach more to him. We have fun with math challenges and such as an extra bonus, but his regular Singapore 2A has just been something that I can literally hand him and he just completes....didn't seem "right" to me ;) He doesn't necessarily mind that it's review, but I can definitely tell the AMOUNT of review matters (otherwise boredom sets in), so I will definitely make a point to keep the review in the mix, but skip ahead if necessary too.
  10. A current 'easier' chapter book series that DS is loving right now is Nate the Great - and like a PP mentioned, almost any of the Lobel books (Frog & Toad, etc). We've also moved on to Magic Treehouse, etc but DS only wants to read one chapter and then he's done...so for now, to build up, I am keeping it simpler with letting him get the 'easy' chapter books and building stamina...
  11. Thank you all SO much for your responses :D I feel SO much better knowing that it's "normal"...I really was feeling like I was doing something WRONG b/c I just don't feel like I am teaching...I feel like I just supervise and answer questions when and if they come up. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful...just worried I was messing something up and/or not doing things right, LOL!!
  12. Thanks so much to you both! I am definitely weary of moving too far ahead, so I definitely like the idea of continuing to add the challenge elsewhere and continuing with the material he does know as well. I think to help balance, I will just make sure it's not TOO much of the "easy stuff" so he doesn't get burned out on it...that's my biggest fear in that respect. That's a great idea and I need to find some more challenge things to continue with. We went through Logic Safari book 1 and he liked it, but wanted a little more 'variety'...one I recently added (that he LOVES) is Solve It! Challenges - I found this free download on the TpT website for November: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/SOLVE-IT-November-Math-Logic-Problems-Using-the-100-number-Board and he's done the first one so far and LOVES it!! She has some others also available that I might have to get for him (or at least come up with something similar for him to practice).
  13. I am struggling to find a good balance between how much independent work he as vs how much is actually me teaching him, in several subjects, but most specifically MATH. I feel like his math is nothing but review, review, review at the moment, and I don't want him to hate math like I did. So, how much do you actually TEACH? Should it be where he's doing his exercise in Singapore math and just completes the work even though he completely understands the concept? Should I be skipping these sections or is the constant review beneficial? I am sorry to sound stupid, but I don't want to stress him out either by making it too challenging...at the same time, don't want to have it too 'hum-drum' and have him HATE math (which is currently his favorite subject). To give a general idea, he's on Unit 2 of 2A and working on 3 digit addition with regrouping (339+104+40=, etc). Today, he completed the exercise independently and got only 2 incorrect (and was incorrect only b/c of not paying attention to what he re-grouped and was off by 1 digit - typically he gets them ALL correct on the first try), and when I asked him to re-check the 2 incorrect, he found the mistake immediately. Should I be skipping this portion and call it mastery?! I just feel like I should actually be 'teaching' him more than I am...I don't want to sound like I am bragging about his ability b/c I am NOT - I am really just not sure what to do. Math didn't come easily for me like it does for him...I can explain a concept to him once and he just GETS it...but I don't know what to do with that?! Maybe set aside those chapters and then revisit them for review periodically?! PLEASE HELP!
  14. That kinda bugs me too...I think maybe it's just how her character is supposed to be, but I do wish she would quit with it. The 3rd episode was definitely the cheesiest so far...his "awakening" from the coma was cheesy, LOL! I am still really liking it though :) I finally had a chance to watch the pilot of Grimm and it's so much darker than this show - I like it, but am not in the "love" department for it yet...
  15. I still haven't had a chance to catch up with Grimm...I need to turn on Hulu and check out the first two episodes before I get really behind...my mom watched it though and said it was nothing like OUAT though...so I am not sure how much I will really like it...we will see ;)
  16. Still totally loving it after tonight ;) Tonight was a little cheesier than the others as far as a couple of the scenarios went...predictable and staged, but I still really like the show a LOT! Next week should be interesting ;)
  17. Oh that stinks that many clubs treat Cloverbuds differently than regular members...our group is specifically a homeschool 4-H club, so maybe that makes a difference? I think a LOT must depend on the actual main leader or something. I know our Extension Office rep told us that no two 4-H clubs are exactly the same though...so it may be a matter of either starting your own or finding one that does more of what you want...my understanding is that 4-H is what you, as a club, make it and it really sucks that they are leaving the Cloverbuds in the dark :( Our Cloverbuds won't be doing *some* of the things that the Intermediates and Seniors get to do, like the Record Books aren't done until the kids are at least 9 years old, and while the Cloverbuds are able to complete presentations, they are not eligible for actual competition (county, district, or state) until they are 9 or older...but things like the Youth Fair Day presentations are open to 4-H'ers of all ages 5-19. All of our meetings have involved all of the children though. The Intermediates and Seniors do split off for separate leadership meetings but starting next week, everyone will be doing their specific groups (we have different parent leaders 'teaching' groups that our club pre-selected - gardening, acting, agriculture, animal science, engineering and sewing) and the groups include a whole range of ages (except the ones that are specifically meant for olders).
  18. Fantastic!! We are about to start our curriculum groups on the 16th - and I ended up volunteering as a parent leader...so I am teaching one of the groups with the Acres of Adventure curriculum. Should be fun! LOL!! The kids all voted on the student officers last week, so we finally have all those in place now and things are really getting moving now :D How is your group going?!
  19. :lurk5: I've seen these mentioned on the blog link above (Blog, She Wrote) and have always wanted to do one, but haven't...hopefully this thread will get me started!! We have a composition notebook for his Singapore work (textbook) as well as another composition notebook for his Life of Fred work, but I really should combine it all into one Math Journal...
  20. That's been my concern as well...I have high expectations though, since it's from the creators of LOST - I keep thinking that we just have NO idea what kind of twists and turns there will be (not to mention cliffhangers...). I keep forgetting about Grimm...I really want to watch it as well...now to figure out when it's on so I don't miss anymore of it!! For the PP who asked about what Snow did to the Queen - I can't quite figure that out either...I am thinking it either has to do with her 'stealing' Charming away - OR if you think about the actual fairy tale - Snow White was the fairest in the land, which is why the Queen wanted her killed...so maybe her beauty? IDK! Pretty sure the cute cop is the "woodsman" from the fairy tale :D
  21. Anyone else watching?!!! I am LOVING it so far!! I am so happy to have a new 'must watch' show each week, since I am SO over Glee this season...
