Thank you, I'll check out the Super Sentence and Paragraph Writing book. I'm also looking into the Sonlight literature list after viewing your blog. :) I haven't visited that site in a few years and they have a great looking 2nd grade list for my dd.

Thanks!

Is anyone using Classical Writing's Primer in 2nd grade?
Jane posted a topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
If so, can you tell me what other programs you use to round out your second grader's language arts program? Also, how much time do you schedule for CW each week? (I posted a more general thread below, but would also like to try one specific to CW because I'm leaning towards it for my rising 2nd grader.) -
Hmmm. Another CLE recommendation and I haven't a clue what you all are talking about :001_huh: which is why I thought I would ask and see what others like. I would love to see a placement test. Can you link me?
-
Thanks! This is what I'm looking for, what you all are combining. :) I'm leaning towards R&S Spelling, but haven't a clue what CLE Reading is. What does CLE stand for? I'd love to hear from those using CW too. What else do you use?
-
Thanks. Are you saying you only do grammar with you 2nd grader for language arts? I'm looking to piece together a whole LA curriculum.
-
What does your language arts package look like for your second grader? I'm looking ahead to next year and typically begin researching this early. What are your current favorites? :) TIA!

Another option, Saxon 8/7 has a Tests and Worksheets booklet. The worksheets are really timed drills. For five minutes a day, you can spend some time reviewing these basic facts (fractions, percents, etc.) I find them quite helpful in the pre-algebra stage. Attempting to link you, scroll down to 8/7 if this works... http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntk=keywords&Ntt=saxon+87&action=Search&N=0&Ne=0&event=ESRCN&nav_search=1&cms=1&Go.x=14&Go.y=19

Saxon: Do you skip problems?
Jane replied to Jenn in CA's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
No, but the Saxon Algebra DIVE CD does suggest that most children can skip one in every five lessons: teach two lessons on Monday and have your child complete the problems for the second lesson; test every Friday. However, if you print out their sample syllabus, it differs even more. I think they do the one in five lessons skipping in the first 30 lessons only which are a review of Algebra 1/2, then slow the material down to three lessons per week as the difficulty of the material increases. If someone wants me to review these alternative schedules to verify the accuracy of what I vaguely recall and post again, I will. Again, this is at the Algebra level, I also remember reading in Saxon 8/7 to NOT skip any problems. -
www.dictionary.com. This website even includes a speaker for listening to how a word is pronounced. Remember, our goal is to teach our children to seek answers. :)

Katya Update - Please pray for documents + ...
Jane replied to Cindy in C-ville's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Would love to pray and am doing so now. Blessings to you and your family. :) -
Honestly? I just stretch whenever/wherever I think it is appropriate. If they are breezing through the questions at their level, I start asking the harder ones. If the book from one level looks better than the one from another (or is easier to borrow), I use it instead. If a writing assignment from one grade level interests them more than the one recommended for their grade level, I use it. I should note, my children are loving Tapestry of Grace so I'm never dealing with attitudes and I think that's key. If you have a happy child, you are at the right level.

Driving other people's kids around
Jane replied to mirth's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I love to! It's more fun for my children and my friends' children. :) Besides, many of my friends are so busy serving in other ways, it's a simple way for me to say, "Thank you!" and treat them to an easy afternoon or evening. -
Anyone a fan of quick bread recipes?
Jane replied to Jane's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Wow! These are fun and new ideas. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to try both ideas. :) -
Anyone a fan of quick bread recipes?

Pumpkin! Of course! What a fantastic idea, given the season. :) I'm off to make some Pumpkin Bread and a BIG, "Thank you!" for taking the time to type out your favorite recipe! -
Which printing option did you choose for Lively Latin?
Jane replied to Jane's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thanks. I wish they offered a cheaper "in print only" option. -
We need a quick and filling breakfast tomorrow morning so I'm leaning towards my old standby: scrambled eggs and a quick bread. I usually make banana bread or blueberry muffins. However, with my family growing I would love an option that's quicker than blueberry muffins. Does anyone have a loaf version of a quick bread (besides banana bread as I have NO bananas this month)? Or even a 9x11 pan of something to serve with scrambled eggs?

Would you consider Saxon Math, either Saxon 8/7 or Algebra 1/2? The Saxon 8/7 book includes daily drills to make sure the children have solidly memorized a lot of different basics including fractions, decimals, percents, the four operations of fractions, names of polygons, etc. My 12yo is currently in algebra and she said the Saxon pre-algebra books were the best preparation for algebra. (She had used Singapore Math Primary Series previously and the Keys to Algebra books.)

Which printing option did you choose for Lively Latin?
Jane replied to Jane's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Hmmm. I may have done something wrong, but when I checked out the pricing I ended up with a quote of $60 at 50% off. If that's correct it certainly wouldn't save me any money. -
Which printing option did you choose for Lively Latin?
Jane replied to Jane's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you! I will check this out. :) -
I'm debating how to order and print Lively Latin. What did you choose and why? I really want a colored version and just can't see myself printing 400 pgs in full color. Are you printing in black and white? Is it nice enough? Trivial question, I know, but not when you consider the cost. ;)

This is great advice. A second option is to simple double up on the # of assignments she completes in a day. All of my children (thus far) went through a stage where they were capable of moving ahead quicker and simply did 2-3 days worth of assignments in a single day. At other points, we slowed down greatly (usually to develop mental math skills). HTH.

Time for Kids or other currrent event resources?
Jane replied to creekmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My children like "God's World News" and also like the PBS Beeswax website for short snippets from around the world: http://pbskids.org/beeswax/?campaign=go_shows. I'm eager to check out the other links recommended. :) -
If one wanted to complete Lively Latin in a year...

Does anyone know of a Spanish program on Computer
Jane replied to Tree House Academy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
This is a fun supplemental option, Michelle. Thanks for posting. My children loved the idea. :)
