  1. I'm looking through some coconut chicken recipes for dinner and thought I would ask here if anyone has a favorite recipe. Any favorite recipes? :)
  2. Is anyone else prone to very dry small patches of skin on their face? I'm starting to wonder if perhaps it's due to a cosmetic I am using. Otherwise, though, does anyone have a product recommendation to tame the itchy, dry skin?
  3. I have a 10yo who struggled in the beginning to learn to read. She is progressing nicely now and about to complete Phonics Pathways, plus some phonetic workbooks. I'm looking for materials that I can use (beside simply reading) to make sure she continues to improve her reading skills. She does very well with a combination of sit down time with mom and individual time with workbooks focused on writing and reading phonetically. Her workbooks do not need to correspond to our oral reading lessons, but I do want to continue both styles. Any recommendations?
  4. Maybe I should start a new post asking for phonetic materials for 4th-5th graders because my dd is 10 and I really do want to continue with further phonetic instruction. She struggled quite a bit in the beginning and is just now catching up. I haven't tested her to see if she is "officially" reading at a 4th grade level, but my previous child was a much stronger reader at her age. I want to make sure this child keeps moving forward.
  5. I have a child who is about to complete PP and a couple other phonetic workbooks. I would like to continue phonics instruction with her. What are my options? Please include workbook options because she does benefit from them. Thanks.
  6. What is the hive's opinion on handwriting and slants? Here's my situation. One of my children has never mastered the forward slant. She holds her pencil incorrectly (wrist above words) and tends to slant backwards. (She's a righty.) At this point, given that handwriting and backwards letters were a prolonged problem for her, I'm inclined to allow a slight backwards slant in cursive but will encourage her to focus on vertical letters as much as possible, ignoring the full forward slant for the sake of neatness and consistency. I've had no success getting her to hold her hand differently, but am open to suggestions and opinions.
  7. I know slow cookers are over-discussed among HSing moms, but here are my questions: 1) Do any of you own two slow cookers? If so, which sizes? Here's why: I am considering a second one for side dishes and think I want to go small, but wonder if I'm just better off having two large slow cookers instead. Which leads to question #2... 2) This is for those of you with 6+ children or just hearty eaters, do you use your slow cooker much as your children get older and require more food? Or are you better off using your oven? As it is right now my 6qt pot is brimming over. I'm wondering where we'll be in five years when my younger ones are eating more. Our slow cooker is getting quite the workout these days. It's so convenient to prepare breakfast in the evening while everyone is sleeping, and then prepare dinner early in the day while baby is sleeping. I'm definitely not ready to go w/out one.
  8. How about complex carbs? Many of them contain some great protein too, especially beans and quinoa. :)
