  1. Yes, we do interest led science, for example. My big girl is very interested in Chemistry and after a brief unit about Astronomy, we are going to head back to Chemistry. (Though Chemistry doesn't have much to do with being a duck! )

But when the girls express interest in something, I do seek out opportunities/resources/materials for them to explore the interest more. If it is something that sticks, the more involved I get with finding more materials/resources/opportunities. Sometimes things are just a passing phase too.

  2. Looks good! I would add some crafts/art and maybe music to round it out a bit. I have rising second grader and a K'er and for art, I have a drawer filled with all sorts of odds and ends that I collect. They just take glue, scissors and crayons/markers and create whatever. Nothing formal. And while they are doing that, I play different genres of music in the background. That is art and music here! Nothing fancy or formal and (since we need to report) agreeable with the school district.

  3. I also have a super reluctant reader who is starting 2nd grade this coming year. This past summer, I told her she could stay up as long as she wanted at night but she needed to be reading. It worked! She reads every night and we keep a variety of books on her night stand. She probably stays up an extra hour to read and pops out every now and then asking for help with a word.

So I don't assign actual minutes of required reading. She will begin reading aloud to me again when we start our school year.
