It's a two-parter: 1) We are all good at spotting "other" -ness. When someone comes into my community from another country, or even another region, I'm usually aware he or she isn't from here. I can't always say where he or she is from. 2) Familiarity. Locals in tourist areas have a lot of familiarity with the different groups of tourists tend to visit. I can correctly identify many people as German or Austrian just by their appearance because I lived in Germany and Austria for an extended time, so I am familiar with whatever those subtle differences are. Sometimes, it's obvious, like the leather jackets in July, but other times it's not something I can pick out. We Americans often aren't familiar with those differences because we don't see enough of any one other nationality to have absorbed them. Edit to add a response to posts that came in while I was composing: If you visit areas that aren't as touristy, the locals won't be as good at spotting you as American. They will know you aren't local. Just like here. When you visit another country, try to behave like a courteous guest, and not like a tourist. Be open to learning about local customs. Look for sameness. (Tourists look for differences. "This toilet doesn't flush like mine at home, etc.")

Read this because someone at church said she based her lesson on it and I found the lesson ... umm... harmful. The teacher kept trying to teach that sincere repentance is all you need to cure mental illness. I'm a little late to conversation; is it still going? I have not learned as much from conference since the one immediately following September 11th. For about the same reasons. My DH has been hit with some pretty severe mental health issues. (Depression and O.C.D., at least. It's not all been sorted out yet.) He has been struggling with determining what emotions/ideas are real and which are not. So my favorite was definitely Elder Holland's talk. I had just told DH two or three weeks ago that it was okay to lean on other people's testimonies for a while, so when Elder Holland ended with "if your faith is a little tested in this or any season, I invite you to lean on mine," I totally burst into tears. My kids wondered what was going on. Other phrases from his talk that were so timely for our family: "But if you and your family want to be healed, don't let those questions stand in the way of faith working it's miracle." "Last observation: when doubt or difficulty come, do not be afraid to ask for help. If we want it as humbly and honestly as this father did, we can get it. The scriptures phrase such earnest desire as being of 'real intent,' pursued 'with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God.' I testify that in response to that kind of importuning, God will send help from both sides of the veil to strengthen our belief." [Emphasis mine.] (I've always had trouble asking for help, but have to had to for DH's sake, and our ward has really, really stepped up for us.) Not as relevant to our current situation, but still a good reminder: "So be kind regarding human frailty - your own as well as that of those who serve with you in a Church led by volunteer, mortal men and women. Except in the case of His only perfect Begotten Son, imperfect people are all God has ever had to work with. That must be terribly frustrating to Him, but He deals with it. So should we."

I want to point out the quotes around "doctrine" in the above. "Doctrines" (fundamental beliefs) are different from "teachings" (which allows for the interpretation of the teacher). The doctrines of the "Mormon" church haven't actually changed much at all. If you compare the fundamental beliefs from Joseph Smith's era to the fundamental beliefs today, you probably couldn't find any noticeable difference. The "teachings" have changed fairly dramatically, especially as the last few decades of prophets have really emphasized NOT teaching anything that isn't doctrine. Early Latter-day Saints seemed not to find that so important and careful study of early history and looking at the context some of the odder quotes come from make that quite clear. I've never heard any "new" revelation that changed any doctrine; some have clarified our beliefs where we didn't have a clear position before. Others change procedure. The LDS church uses the Bible as it is. We prefer the King James Bible for English speakers. We have not discarded any portion of it.

Ok, Dr. Hive, I have a challenge for you. I want to google a strange symptom my 8 year daughter and I have had. The whole family has been down with a bronchial thing. Lots of coughs, headaches, and mild fevers. A couple of days ago, I had a burning sensation around my mouth (on my face, not inside my mouth at all), as though I was about to sprout a Van Dyke beard and mustache. DH said I wasn't red or rashy. It lasted a few hours, then went away. Today, DD8 is complaining of the same sensation. She's been scratching at hers, though, so it is a bit red. Weird, huh? I'm not finding anything on google, so I'm not using the right terms, apparently.

My youngest just turned three a couple of days before Christmas. For some reason, a couple of weeks ago, DH ended up explaining to her the difference between transparent, translucent (he showed her at this point that she could hold her hand up to a light and sort of see through to your blood), and opaque. Not the sort of thing you'd expect to stick. Her toddler bed is still located in our room, as she is a total night owl and our other daughter is not. So we put her to bed a week or so after the conversation she and her dad had. She didn't want to be there, but the house was dark and we were in bed. She starts singing her own little song that she's making up as she goes along. (Daddy posted the lyrics to his facebook page soon after, while it was still fresh in his mind.) It goes something very close to this: "I am singing loudly and mommy does not like it 'cause it wakes her up, but I (s)till singing 'cause I want to." A verse or so later: "I am not trans parent because I can not see through myself. I trans lucent. Maybe opaque. My bear is opaque."

I agree with those who suggest the parents haven't read the book themselves. Whether or not it's appropriate for that age group is another story, but from the comments the parents made in the video, they haven't read it. (They may have seen the movie, which, though enjoyable, doesn't fully capture the book.) They didn't read the one-page correspondence from the school; why would they read a book? The daughter probably finally said something after the class was halfway through, and then they freaked. I have a SIL like this. She flat out does not read unless required for work. She waits for the movie to come out. (She has listened to a few recorded books if her mother, my MIL, has them checked out from the library.) When Harry Potter hit it big, she came to us (before we had kids) to ask if it was appropriate for her kids to read. When we suggested she read it herself, that just did not compute. (Instead, my MIL listened to the recorded versions and told her they would be ok.) Partially based on my SIL's kids and how they are turning out.... I would respectfully suggest to the family in the video that the children who grow into school shooters, etc. probably did not grow up with parents who read with their children and thoughtfully discussed what they were reading. Far more likely to have had parents who were rarely aware of what they were learning/reading at school.
