Which community colleges offer classes, which high schoolers can take as DE, fully online? (We currently live overseas). And if anyone has personally tried any, can you please post reviews of the college in general and the class specifically?

My dd (6th grade) is so DONE with Holt's Earth Science. She's finished a good portion of the book. She's very bright but finds the book and subject matter incredibly boring. Would it be crazy to just stop Earth Science (consider it a half credit?) and move on to Biology? Would it be possible to complete Elemental Science Biology (Logic Stage) in 18 weeks instead of 36? That way, she could just move on to Physical Science next year. Edited to add: I already have all the books for Elemental so it would be the most convenient option and she seems excited about the setup (her little sister is doing E.S.Grammar Stage)

My dd is doing Saxon 87 this year. It's her first year with Saxon but she was previously in a private school (overseas). I can't say much about the transition from R&S but she is doing very well in it. The drills and review have provided her with a strong foundation I believe. Perhaps you can give her the placement test on Saxon's website? You may also want to consider Derek Owens and if you do, he may be able to provide a placement test as well. We'll probably switch over to DO from Algebra onwards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

We're doing Edhesive AP Computer Science. I asked my ds to describe how it works. Here's what he said: They watch videos and coding activities for each lesson. After every few lessons there's a graded assignment and quiz. They can ask questions on the forum for help on assignments and receive help from TA's and other students. They can keep working on the assignment until they get the grade they want. There are exams every unit there's an exam.

Great news! Can't wait! Did SWB write a grammar book for middle school (post FLL)? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Science: I am strongly considering Rainbow Science for next year. (Could work for your 6th grader) For 8th grade you can look into Derek Owens' Physical Science class online. These are things that either worked well for us or which I received / read great reviews about so will seriously consider for next year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Saxon (Hake) Grammar is working well for my 6th grade daughter and includes diagramming. But their writing curriculum isn't that useful. If you wish to outsource for writing in 8th grade I heard great things about Bravewriter's online classes. Otherwise, Institute of Excellence in Writing worked well for us in both elementary and middle school. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Maybe for Geometry and beyond try Derek Owens. He's received great reviews. And it's an option which would provide outside accountability and grading. -
Literary analysis online or DVD mid-year start?
Maryam replied to Superfly's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My 6th grade dd just joined Center for Lit, which means she would have only missed 3 sessions and will catch the fourth. She plans on listening to the recordings of the discussions she's missed and taking notes. We're doing the discussion only option, not the writing. -
Thank you for your detailed feedback. Very helpful! Ok, so I'm not quite sure how the difficulty of levels thing works. Say my 3rd grader could get through levels 1 & 2. Would you push through levels 3 & 4 or move on to the next lesson and do the next levels (3&4) of each lesson the following year?

I am interested in using Zaccaro's Challenge Math series as supplements for dd 3rd grade (doing Saxon 54) and dd 6th grade (doing Saxon 87) to add more challenge and conceptual understanding. I may be switching the 6th grader to Derek Owens for Algebra and beyond, but either way will supplement with Zaccaro. How do you successfully use it as a supplement: once a week? Daily? On summer holiday? And for how long? Do you go in order or pick and choose whatever they're currently learning to give it more depth? Thank you all in advance for your input.

If you don't mind me asking as well, is Homeschool Spanish Academy suitable for middle school students?

Well I think it's not a problem if people offer constructive criticism or simply give a respectful honest opinion simply stating "this was my least favorite class". No explanations necessary. I think? -

I had posted the same thing in the middle school board. This one is asking specifically about high school level courses.
