  1. Thanks for the replies. I have no idea how to do a transcript. That's something else I need to figure out. I'm assuming you have to put some type of description with each course showing the books used. I don't want to list books that wouldn't "count". UGH. Highschool is scaring the pants off me! Thanks! Kim
  2. I want to follow the standard four year Ancients, Medieval, Early, Modern. I will have two kiddos, one in 9th and one in 7th. I had a thread here a while back about wanting to use SOTW and MOH with them. I know I will need to beef it up for the older. I was thinking of maybe using Notgrass World, split between 9th and 10th for him, alongside SOTW and MOH. I could tie in the IEW history writings for the periods. I'm looking at some type of worldview class to cover 9/10. I want to tie in literature, art history, etc. In 11th and 12th, I was thinking of using Notgrass or BJU alongside to cover government in 11th and economics in 12th. I'm looking at using Starting Points in these two grades for worldview. It would include some lit, but I would need to tie in more and art, etc. Thoughts? How in the world would you list this on a transcript? I just need a plan for this non-academic, book-phobic son. We never really hit art history, music, composers, etc., so I would like to cover those during high school. Suggestions? Thanks! Kim
  3. We're winding down from WWI to modern from now thru the summer. Your list would be a great help. I've let my library planning for books fall by the wayside somewhat. Thanks!
  4. UGH!!!!:cursing::banghead: I have been looking at this problem for TWO days and couldn't figure it out. As soon as you posted, Michelle, I saw my mistake. When we figured the two regular shapes, we just picked up a wrong number! We were working with a number that wasn't even in the problem. So, it will come out to the same answer either way you work it. I do believe it is time for spring break. That is all.
  5. Thank you, Cynthis. I will look at those. I've already looked at WVWW and decided it is toooo much for us. Are there any less intense than even these you have mentioned. I have a 13yo ds that probably needs something a bit gentler and easier.
  6. I see now that the "height" would actually be the width if you were looking down on the porch floor plan, but I'm still confused as to why it would work out with the trapezoid formula. If you divided the porch into two regular shapes and found each area for that, it seems that would come out to the same answer as if you used the one the TM suggests, but it doesn't. I just don't get why I don't understand this, for goodness sake!
  7. I'm stumped on a math problem. I'm hoping someone can make me understand why it is done the way it is in the TM. After Macorkel Construction replaced the roof on a wrap-around porch, the customer decided to have them replace the floor boards as well. What is the square footage of the porch floor plan? The shape of the wrap porch is drawn like two trapezoids with the dimensions of one as 24x32x8 and the other is 16x24x8. The TM uses the formula for area of a trapezoid. The lesson started with finding the area of irregular shapes by dividing them into two regular shapes. I assumed that's what you would do here. I don't understand why you would include the height to find the area of the floor boards. Thanks for any help! Kim
  8. read during the Ancients period? If I use SOTW and MOH for middle grades, what can I use to study the books we read from a Christian worldview, hopefully including lit analysis? Any such animal? Are there products that accomplish that individually? Thanks, Kim
  9. I'm still trying to figure this out before the expo. I have SOTW and MOH both for ancients. If I want to go with these and beef them up with reading some of the classic lit, what could I use for a Christian worldview and lit analysis? I looked at Invitation to the Classics, which looks like a good reference, but not for lit analysis. Is there some product that covers lit analysis with a Christian worldview? Something like Starting Points, but for the books for the Ancients period? How does MFW handle studying the classics? I was think of using IEW's Ancients for writing. Don't they have some products for the classics? Thanks for all your help, Kim
  10. Thanks. It sounds like it would be good to have, even though it doesn't do everything I want it to. I'll check the FS board. Thanks again! Kim
  11. From what I've gathered online, this would give some insights into some of the classics. But, does it offer much for discussion, lit analysis, etc? I'm looking for something that would tie in a Christian worldview. Suggestions for other books or products? Thanks, Kim
  12. I have frequented this board for many, many years, since it was the old board. I'm greatly surprised and saddened how fellow homeschoolers jump on one issue and use it to beat others over the head. I've always recommended this board to people IRL as a place for insight and encouragement. Maybe not so much anymore. I don't think the OP here is the one who's overreacting. I came from a sub-par public school education and I'm sure I don't know a thimbleful compared to other moms here. But I desire more for my children. I don't have time to preread many things. I come here for insights and reviews, opinions and suggestions. It just doesn't seem to be as enjoyable anymore. Some are so quick to jump on someone for not having the same thoughts or beliefs. Sound familiar?
  13. I've been following this thread, but haven't posted bc I hardly ever do, especially in a "heated debate". I just don't ever feel I have anything worth any weight to offer. But, as a mom to two upcoming teenage boys, I am glad for this heads-up about some of the content. I agree with Melissa and the OP. I truly get what everyone is saying here about not censoring, but SWB is known to us as a Christian, homeschooling mom that wrote SOTW. I was really surprised to read about the "damp field", even though I didn't get it at first.:tongue_smilie: I don't know if I'm naive or not, but I was truly surprised that the book contained some things of this nature. I understand the relevance of depicting a sexual relationship to establish facts surrounding an event, but I don't need to read their "talk" during such relationship.:tongue_smilie: Now, I am flying blind here as I have never even seen the book in person or held it in my hand, but with two boys going thru lots of changes, I don't want to put images in their heads during history of "plowing someone's field"! I love SWB, her materials, and her dedication to the hs movement and this forum. But, a small note, "contains some sexual content", or some sort, is not too much considering it is sold on a hs website for hs use. I realize everyone's standards are different. Someone's PG movie is someone's R and someone's R is someone's X. But, I'm glad there is some rating system in place for some heads up that, we as parents, need to check the movie further before letting our children see it. I'm not suggesting that books be rated, or maybe they should, but given who she is, that her books are written for hs use, a little heads up would be nice. Then we can come here and have lively discussions about what's written on what page and how in the world can you possible be offended by that! I do regret the timing of this, given all the other kerfuffle, but I for one am glad for the info. (Now ducking for cover. Please don't tear me apart too much, I hardly ever post.)
  14. Thanks for all the replies. I do already have T&T and MOH that we never got around to using. Janie was nice enough to send me Jessica's schedule, so I'm thinking we'll be set. Now, just have to tie in IEW maybe for writing? I'm thinking I'm going to try to beef this up, add in more lit, since we'll being doing Ancients and let my 9th grader do this as well. Thoughts? Thanks again. You ladies are always such a help.
  15. Thank you, Spetzi. I completely forgot about MOH. I actually have it put up. I'll have to get it out.
  16. I would love to have Trivium's. I'll pm you! I actually found it in a google search last night. I was thrilled until I realized the link didn't work anymore. I'd love to have your's as well, when you're ready to share. Thanks so much, Kim
  17. I'm thinking of using this with my middler schooler. Does it include church history? If not, what resource could I use alongside? Thanks!:bigear:
  18. Yeah, I received an email from my state hs organization proudly proclaiming that Ken Ham would still be speaking there. :glare: Apparently there was some confusing about the initials of the expo and they didn't want people to think it was them that disinvited him. I won't be going to any talks. I just want to look at books and hold them in my hands.
  19. I took something in similar shape to Staples. I had them remove the binding, trim off the jagged edges left from the previous spiral, put a copy of what I wanted on cardstock for a new front coverpage, added to the front a clear plastic coversheet, and rebound. Viola', looked like brand new. This was a Shurley book that I had previously had the binding cut off and had spiral bound for more ease of use. I simply had them copy the other cover I had and trimmed that back to fit. Perhaps you could do up something on the computer to personalize it for him or even do a copy of another book with the same cover. If you take the file on a flash drive, they'll print it on cardstock for you. In total, I think it cost about $5-7. Well worth it.
  20. I came across this while searching for a worldview program to use with ds 12 & 14. I have done much googling and searching here, but really can't find any reviews within the last couple of years. To me, that's not a good sign, but the samples on their site looked really great. But, I couldn't find a sample for this particular set, YHIWV. I'm looking at getting Young Historian's Intro to Wview, Christian Theology & Ancient Polythiesm, along with the books that could with it for each chronological time period, and Conversations from the Garden. I don't think they'll be at my expo in Atlanta in May, unless some other vendor may have it. I really like to hold a book in my hand. :( Or, does anyone have a worldview suggestion to make? Thanks! :bigear:
  21. Yvonne, which idea are you meaning is a good, solid plan?:tongue_smilie: My head is spinning at this point! I love what you did for you son with zoology. Something else I'm starting to wade into is transcripts. How will you show that or do you have to present one for trade school? I've spent the morning on Ga's DOE site searching grad reqs and also checked out the technical school in our area. I can't figure out what they want to see, if anything, on a hs transcript. This is an area I certainly need to learn more about! Thanks!
