Exterior house work begins!

I am super excited because we have materials purchased, an agreement in place for the labor and they plan to start Tuesday or Wednesday. They are installing the rest of our windows and the siding. Dh is installing the new front door which we hope to buy this week.

I have made a decision on the paint and Dh likes it so it is a go and I won't second guess myself again.

Here is a link to my photobucket so you can see the pain colors.....remember our roof is dark brown.

Rejoice with me! Paint is a big decision. Oh the green is the house, the almost white is the trim and yellow is front door. There will be some copping (scallop detail) above the front A frame window to break that up a bit.

Yay for starting work!! Link won't open so I can't comment on paint but I'll still rejoice because picking paint is always my least favorite part of a job.

We tore out our kitchen and installed new kitchen cabinets this weekend. The cabinets are in but we still need to get the dishwasher, countertops, and sink in. That'll get done slowly throughout the week. It is our first big project for getting the house ready to sell.

That is awesome! We are in the getting ready to sell mode tool. After the exterior is done...which could be with in3 weeks, we are putting a for sale sign out front. There is a house in town we like....maybe it will still be there.

I can see it now. I had crap wifi when I was trying to look earlier. Nice colors.

I wish the kitchen was the only thing we had to do to get the house on the market. We also have to redo the floors downstairs (doing this ourselves,) touch up drywall, paint, install new carpets upstairs (someone else is doing this,) and small odds and ends outside. Luckily there is nothing available where we want to live currently so that isn't eating away at me.

I hope the house you like is still available when you are ready.

I keep listing the things I don't like about the other house so I can deal with it not being there when we need it. Lol.....but gee it has so many things we want. Perfect location putting all of us 15 minutes closer to school and work. In town. Nice neighborhood. All fresh and new...basically move in condition.....

We have interior work to do here as well....but our plan is to put it for sells soon as the exterior is done. But keep working on the interior things.

There is actually one house that is in the exact location we want but it is a foreclosure and is an all cash auction type deal. We would have access to getting inside to see it before making a bid but that whole concept scares me too much.

Hey that is how we bought this house! And although it has almost drove me insane, we will probably make a lot of money on it. We stole it at the on line auction.

This house is in a prime location that I can't imagine it being a steal. I mean the starting bid leaves tons of room for us to fix any actual problems and then still have it increase in value. But tons of people know that so I can't imagine it staying low.

If it is still available after our sells we may consider it. But I can't imagine it being available.

Did you say you are able to see it ahead of time? That is how ours worked. We saw it and then had to go bid on the on line auction. I hear sometimes auctions are sight unseen....not sure I could do that.

Yes, we can see it and then bid online. I know people who have bid on houses with just seeing that outside and trying to peek a look through the windows. I couldn't do that.

I can't believe you're getting there. SO EXCITING! And I love those paint colors, though I might go with a slightly less pinky cream/taupe and something more white. Still, they're earthy and beautiful and will look elegant with your brown roof.

So it looks pinkish?  Hmmm...maybe.  It is HGSW4041 called swan pointe.  This was a suggested combination....it is actually MUCH more white than what I wanted, but my new windows are white so I don't want to have too much contrast between the windows and trim.

I painted my old front door with the yellow last night with the sample.  Well, not the whole thing, but a good portion so I could see the effect.  I like it.

I couldn't get the link to open--I suspect my internet.

But I just wanted to say we have a yellow front door. Very distinctive and cheerful. I hope you love yours!

I am pretty excited about it.  It is Doyle Gold in the HG SW collection.  The green is Meadow Sage 3244 and the trip is Swan Pointe 4041.

It's the undertone. I'd pick a taupe or cream with a yellow undertone to pull along with the door, not a pink one. The tone is fine but the undertone is what looks odd to me. It's really no biggie though, I'm just picky about colors. Harmonious undertones make it all work and are more restful to the eye than contrasting undertones.

I looked long and hard at my paper samples and the actual paint on my house last night (I used up the sample jars so a fair area) and I do see now what you are seeing.  But I think I am going to just go with it like it is.  If I expend any more mental energy on paint choices my head might explode.  ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Oh Please talk me down. The windows are in, the siding is all on....we are nearing completion....the paint is purchased. And now I am having an anxiety attack about the color.

Please tell me it will be ok. Or like Dh says it is just paint....except yes I know it is just paint, but it cost like $700 so I want it to be right.

Btw, the workers have done a fantastic job. I would recommend them in a heartbeat.

Just $700?! Wow, that's a steal! To paint the exterior of our place it was nearly $2k. And another 7k on the interior and trim. Way to go on a screaming deal :)

It will be great. It will look beautiful. I like the colors and they're very handsome. The undertone thing is purely my artistic preference and there is a reason the pros paired those colors together - trust that they know what is popular and appealing.

I want pictures when it is done :)

I think that's a normal reaction  I've totally been there and done that. Many times!

Sure it's "just paint" but it's a darn lot of it, and what looks amazing in our heads based off of a sample suddenly feels scary when we realize that the entire house is the canvas!! It's not like an accent wall you can re-do in a day, it's a BIG DANG DEAL!

So allow yourself some room for those anxious feelings. It may even still feel scary at first glance once the paint is actually up. But once it's done, you'll likely take a step back and pat yourself on the back for your amazing taste. The colors look great on the paint chips, and I'm sure you'll love the final look!

Oh I'm right there with you on second guessing myself about the choices I'm making as we prepare the house for sale.

I wish I could calm your nerves but I'm awful with paint colors. I'm actually considering hiring someone to choose the interior color for me. That is how little I know about colors

I agree $700 is a steal to paint a house.  Those colors are going to look great.

A lot cheaper and still totally worth it -

Laurel coordinates food palettes for you and her taste is impeccable. These two ebooks are well worth the cost if you don't have a strong design vision of your own for paint. Her no fail choices work beautifully with one another every time.

I will look into that more when it's time to pick colors.

So today is the end of two weeks since the workers began. They are 99% done. I paid them in full yesterday. They are back today finishing up a little caulking and the sheetrock guy still has an hour or so of inside work finishing out new windows.

It has been very successful. They are rough characters but do excellent quality work that has pleased my perfectionist husband.

They are leaving their scaffolding for Dh to use so he can paint without a ladder. Dh told them he will give them a 30 pack for that favor...the guy said, 'make it 25 because I owe you 5 beers'.

Yes, apparently one afternoon when dss16 was here with them they came in for water.....why didn't they have their own water? But anyway he couldn't figure out my water in the door ice/water so they took beer from our refrigerator instead.

I am strangely unfazed by such shockingly unprofessional behavior. LOL.

I am more annoyed by the constant smoking ( not inside) and leaving cigarette butts everywhere in my yard. But overall it has turned out great.

I am going out of town tomorrow.....Dh will be painting while I am gone. He told me 'prepare to be amazed'. :)
