indigomama
We are moving to CA in 2 weeks, and while I grew up there, i have never homeschooled there. All my friends who homeschool there, actually use a public school charter program, we do not want to do that. Can someone please explain the laws to me?
KrissiK
All you do is fill out a private school affidavit with CDE between October 1 and October 15 each year and you're good to go. It's very easy.

quark
And if I'm moving there in December, do I wait until next October to do the affidavit? Since you are filing for the first time, you should find the form online and still fillable. We filed in January when we did it the first time and it worked out fine. Use these line by line instructions to help: http://hsc.org/private-school-affidavit-line-by-line-instructions.html

JenneinCA
Once you file the Private School Affidavit you are a very small private school. You get to choose whatever curriculum you would like. You can choose whatever days off or hours of school you would like. You can choose your own graduation requirements. You can make any educational choices you would like. Depending on your destination in California there are people on the boards that can help you find park days and other ways to meet people. Sounds easier than I thought. Thank you! I will be in SLO county. It looks like you are in San Francisco area? I did manage to get free passes to the Homeschool Day to Monterey Bay Aquarium. I have been there a few times, but my kids haven't, so they are all really excited about that.
Arcadia
Plenty of CA homeschoolers on this board. There is a CA thread on the networking sub-forum. Welcome. My boys like Solvang for road trip pit stop and they like Pinnacles National Monument. ExcitedMama
IndigoMama have you looked into the virtual charter schools? Not sure about the public school ones that your friends are using but through the virtual one you get funds to use for your curriculum and activities. Our is $2200 for both semesters so we use it for DS to take classes and buy his curriculum.

Are there extra steps for using a virtual school? Do you have to use a set curriculum (I'm pretty set on what I use)? Do I have to meet with someone to review my kids? Take tests? The charter my friends use provides funds, but only for select uses, they have to do state testing, and they attend in class twice a week. ExcitedMama
Ours is great, Ocean Grove, and I know they have I think a sister one in San Diego? OG does Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey. Maybe you could email them about adding in SLO? It is actually based in Placeville as for the headquarters. It's great. They have a list of approved curriculum and they approve orders through Rainbow. Orders must be secular but SOTW is fine, so I use the funds for MIF, science, etc. and buy MP myself. About half of the funds go to activities. We do have to have the Education Specialist (ES) come out every 20 days so she can check in on what we are doing. Super easy, she just makes notes and takes some samples, and DS enjoys talking about whatever he's doing.

You should understand that children enrolled in public charter schools, virtual- or campus-based, are public school students, subject to end-of-year testing and other stuff, such as face-to-face meetings. When you file your own affidavit, your children are private school students, not public school students. You are free to do whatever you want, whenever you want, to whatever extent you want. You are accountable to no one except yourself, which is at it should be.
sassenach
And if I'm moving there in December, do I wait until next October to do the affidavit? When we moved to Cali in late November, I waited till the following October. It had zero impact on anything.
