Alicia64
Just thought I'd try again. We're reading from the Dear America series about a girl who went to France and worked the switchboards in WWI. Super book. And my boys haven't once said, "but it's about a girl!" It's very much for boys and girls. We also watched Sargent York -- awesome. And they've seen Yankee Doodle Dandy w/ James Cagney -- also awesome. Do you have any other WW I books to suggest for boys that are 11? And thanks! Alley
Farrar
War Horse, definitely. We liked a bunch of other books, but most of them were picture books. Still, War Game was really touching and I think would still be enjoyed by 11 yos, even if it only took a short time to read. And if you haven't watched the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, more than half the episodes take place during WWI and explore all kinds of aspects of the war all across the globe. OneStepAtATime
Agree War Horse is a good one. And Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. It really helped if I discussed specific names and events referred to in the episode BEFORE they watched the episode, though, so they got more out of the history side. There is also the World War 1 interactive History Adventure for something fun on the side. And this thread might help. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/176974-world-war-1-historical-fiction/

OneStepAtATime
Oh, and if there is a Faberge egg exhibit near you, they MIGHT be interested in seeing that then reading up on Faberge and what WWI and the end of the Romanov family did to his business. That kind of fascinated the kids. If I can find the resources we used, I will list them....

Hunter
Gutenberg has a sizable juvenile fiction collection of WW1 novels that are public domain. Scroll about 1/2 way down. http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/World_War_I_(Bookshelf)
