  1. We rescued an elderly French bulldog, and he was such a great dog that if we ever bought a brand new one (a puppy, you know), we'd consider a Frenchie. Another one I'd consider is a Papillon. They're so dang cute, and in all my research I never read a bad word bout them.
  2. 1. Was the RSVP online only? No written RSVP? Yes, you are correct that adults children who don't live with you (or even if they do) get their own invitations. Miss Manners doesn't approve of "+ one;" she thinks that if the happy bride/groom cares enough she/he would include the name of the +one and send that person an invitation. Lacking that, there's no reason that an adult must attend with a +one. It is perfectly acceptable to attend a wedding by oneself. She also doesn't approve of "save-the-date" cards. Ditto "And Family" written on the envelope. Which isn't the question; sorry. 🙂 Can you actually call the September wedding people and tell them that you can't possibly RSVP for adult people (whether they live with you or not), so can that information be sent to them. 2. Your dd's boy friend should get his own invitation. As should your dd and any other adult person related to you and living in your home. It sucks that K was not invited. I'm sorry. 😞

  4. Nope, except for the "101 Dalmations," the only book my mother ever read to me. My grandmother helped me read the Dick and Jane readers, but otherwise, I was left alone to read or not...which I did: all the horse books in every school library (I went to quite a few schools), my World Book Encyclopedias, even the basal readers from school, which I read almost as soon as I got my hands on them at the beginning of the school year. 🙂
  5. Saxon is an excellent series. As long as your dc do all the problems in every problem set, they'll get an excellent math education. I once went to a Christian school convention (ACSI), and helped a friend who was representing Saxon in the exhibit hall. There was a long line of teachers all day, every day, raving about how well their students did when they switched to Saxon: more students getting better math scores on standardized tests, more students taking more advanced maths, more students doing more math in college. If I were hsing again, I wouldn't hesitate to lead my dc to Saxon.
  6. We didn't get one until a few years ago; and the reason we bought this one is that the lights were LED, which Mr. Ellie says will not burn out. It's a lovely tree, and putting it up takes only a few minutes. We've had it for six or seven years now, and we're still happy with it.
  7. I saw no reason to model our home calendar after the public school, so we followed...the actual calendar, so January 1 to December 31. We took off a couple of weeks in the spring around Easter; a couple of weeks in late August/early September; Thanksgiving through about the middle of January; and random times as needed for whatever reason I felt like it. I "promoted" in the fall, and on paper the dc were *always* the grade they would have been in if they'd gone to school, based on their birthday/age; this made Sunday school teachers happy, and other activities which grouped children based on "grade level." We worked on stuff, however, based on their abilities, not grade level; and worked on stuff until they finished or got tired of it, and then we moved on to the next thing, regardless of when that happened.
  8. Oh, I loved that convention! I sent people there instead of to the Bay Area Chea Convention. It was more reasonably priced, and it had pretty much the same stuff. I drove over from San Jose...a nice drive it was, too.
  9. Don't worry about "creative writing." That's only one kind of writing. For this age, I wouldn't even use any sort of a "curriculum" for writing. I would teach her good spelling, and basic punctuation and capitalization (e.g., sentences must begin with a capital letter and end with some sort of punctuation), and let her write her stories and whatnot on her own, whenever she wants. You can introduce things like writing than-you notes, and the general form of letters and envelopes.
  10. Tonight I am going to the Great Homeschool Convention, just the exhibit hall. I know. I've been an empty nester for over 20 years, but I still love me some homeschool exhibit halls. 🙂 And also it's free, because it's the first night. And also it's less than two miles from my house, so there's that.
  11. When my younger dd was 5yo, our weekly schedule included only two days of Official School Stuff (Monday and Tuesday). On Wednesdays we went to the library; on Thursdays we did a field trip; and on Friday we cleaned house/monthly park day. I counted everything as learning. So on Monday and Tuesday, there would have been some phonics, a little penmanship, and some kind of arithmetic. There would be lots of free time, and doing stuff with her older (8yo) sister. I believe she might also have been in Camp Fire, and so working on Blue Bird badges. I never had assignments that I handed her.

As far as the Bible Nurture and Reader series, once you get past the beginning reading instruction (which I don't like because it has a very strong sight-reading base rather than a strong phonics base), the skills taught through 4th grade are research and investigation, seeking a Bible base (important for some, not for all), proper reading habits, collecting and organizing data, making assumptions, skimming, interpreting, and developing imagery. From 5th grade on, they teach vocabulary and oral reading skills, reading-thinking skills, literary techniques, types of reading, and writing skills. So more than just reading good literature, unless you have guides of some kind to also cover these things.
