Thanks for posting this link, Kareni. I am interested in it but.... HELP! How do you save books on your computer? Please explain in step-by-step details. Speak slowly and clearly. Assume I know nothing.

Anna,

It is actually quite simple. Click on the link to the book, when it opens go to File - Save As - enter a name for the file (ie: 501 Writing Prompt.pdf) The file extension pdf is very important, so be sure you use it. (You can choose a file if you have one set up for school books or something similar to save it in, but it is not necessary.) Now click the Save button & it is now saved on your computer. You can also print it when it opens or after you have saved it on your computer.

Good luck!

-Click on the link to the book inside the post and the book will appear

-Click on the little icon that looks like a floppy disk (a square with the corner clipped off - it is probably right under where it says "address" on the left)

-Click "Save As" on the menu and a save-a-copy box will pop up

-Go to the directory or folder where you want to put the book and double click on it so that it shows up in the top slot of the box, the one that is labelled "Save in:"

-Go down to the bottom slot, the one labelled "Object name" and click on it and delete "download.pdf" and write "501 Writing Prompt.pdf" (the file extension is the part after the dot, in this case "pdf", it tells the computer what kind of file it is, like a picture or a folder or a book or a word file, most books are pdf files)

-Then click the "save" button

. . . including ".pdf" or ".doc" etc. in your filename when you save the document (at the end of the filename). That tells your computer what kind of document you have saved so that it knows how to open it. E-books are usually PDF files and so when you save them you have to call the file "Whatever.pdf" and not just "Whatever" and definitely not "Whatever.doc," which would hopelessly confuse the poor computer. (".doc" is used for Word documents.)

To open your PDF file later, you will need to have something like Adobe Reader installed on your computer, but your computer probably already has it. If not you can get it free from the Adobe site.

If you have never seen a file extension, your operating system (Windows or whatever you have) is probably set up to hide them. A techie you know and love can unhide the file extensions for you and then you'll see how different types of programs produce and use files with specific file extensions.

I hope this helps. Enjoy your e-book!
