Janna
I need mind candy right now. I love Pride and Prejudice and was thinking of re-reading it, but then decided that I would prefer to try a different Austen book. I own, in addition to P&P, Mansfield Park. I haven't read it yet. For some reason though, I've heard it's not in the same ball park as P&P. I would like another humorous and romantic one. Which is your favorite? And no, I'm not bowing to the pressures of putting in an "obligatory other"!
mom2att
I liked S & S about the same as P & P, so I voted for that. I also liked Emma. I haven't read N.A., but I couldn't make it through M.P. It dragged for me in a way that the others didn't, I don't know why.
TeacherZee
I really enjoyed Northanger Abbey. I found Mansfield Park quite boring until the last 3rd.
Jami
I love Persuasion. And the movie with Ciaran Hinds is wonderful too. I'm usually one of the few people in these discussions who loves Mansfield Park. I think Austen's observations on how children turn out based on how they're parented to be very astute. Janna
OK, so for those who love persuasion, would you agree that it is not mind candy? If I'm looking for mind candy, should I pass this up for the moment, or read it anyway?
Jane in NC
I am such a fan of Persuasion that when in Britain I had to travel to Lyme Regis to walk The Cobb. (Lyme Regis is also the setting of John Fowles wonderful novel The French Lieutenant's Woman.) Here is your 360 view of The Cobb for a virtual thrill. Jami
OK, so for those who love persuasion, would you agree that it is not mind candy? If I'm looking for mind candy, should I pass this up for the moment, or read it anyway? Oh I missed the part about mind candy. Um, I'd pick Emma or Northanger Abbey if you're looking for something lighter. Persuasion and MP are heavier, I'd say. And S&S somewhere in between. Maybe. Wendi
That's a hard one for me to answer; I love all of her books. I voted for "Sense and Sensibility", but really, "Emma" is a favorite, too. Well, they all are! Wendi
melopher
Persuasion is my favorite, but if you're looking for mind candy I'd pick a different one. I thought Northanger Abbey was great fun, and Emma is definitely more lighthearted.
PinkInTheBlue
I think Emma is a perfect fit for what you are describing. The beginning was SO light to me that I gave up before really understanding the main characters. It's fun, funny, cute, interesting and has one of my absolute favorite love stories to it. I went from hating it to possibly loving it same or more than P&P.
Nakia
My favorite is Persuasion, but I agree that Emma might be better for you right now. Enjoy!! I love love love Jane Austen!
ladydusk
Emma would certainly be the best choice for what you're looking for. I'm one of the other Mansfield Park fans; it is my favorite, I think. But light and comic it isn't. I do love Fanny Price.
lydiasmommy
Persuasion!!
Colleen
I love Jane Austen's work and my favorites are P&P, S&S, and Persuasion. Emma is lighter than these three, as others have noted. As for mind candy ~ all candy is not created equal. Whereas much contemporary fiction is a Snickers bar, Austen is dark Lindt.;)
CactusPair
Persuasion is my favorite, but if you want mind candy I'd recommend Emma. It's delightful! A real treat to read and escape into.
Dayle in Guatemala
I agree with others that Emma is lighter, but, I think that's why I like it! It's an easy read and there are times that I just want to escape into something. After that, I would say Sense and Sensibility is my favorite followed by Persuasion.
