Aubrey
We're almost out of store-bought, & I thought I'd try making my own before buying more, but I need to put it in the bread maker today. Any tips on slicing? Mine always comes out crumbly & less dense than store-bought, which makes it tough to toast it or keep a sandwich together on it. I've googled w/out much luck. It looks like there might be a special gadget to buy, but for now, I'd rather not buy a gadget, kwim? I've got a bread knife...?
beansprouts
Whole wheat does not hold together as nicely as white flour. If this is the problem, add 1 TBS of gluten for every two cups of flour.

I get pretty good slices with an electric knife if I lay the bread on its side.
Ellie
I have a bread slicer. The bread I make in my Bosch does not crumble. I don't know why it doesn't and yours does, though. :-/

I've made both white & whole wheat breads in my machine & haven't noticed a difference, but I usually only make bread for special dinners, so maybe I just need to pay more attention. beansprouts
I use a regular serrated bread knife, and haven't had any problems. I was also wondering whether you were adding enough salt? The salt helps to control the rise.
love2read
Try leaving the dough a little sticky next time. Well hydrated bread is easier to cut. I just use a bread knife like this one http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Cutlery-Walnut-Tradition-Serrated/dp/B00091SCV4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1232489444&sr=8-1 the scooped serations works better with bread than the serations that are jagged. I've got a bread knife...? my homemade bread slices best (thinly & evenly) the day after it's been baked and stored overnight in the fridge. Fresh bread is hard to slice thin and evenly without it crumbling.
lvbnhome
Yep. What she said...electric knife.. We have a serrated one, but the electric knife makes the slices consistent. I like to put in on it's side (the loaf) if cutting it fresh from the oven. Yummy with butter and honey...mmmmmm
alpidarkomama
We just use a really sharp serrated knife. When the bread is still warm, it is much harder to cut. After being in the fridge or freezer it dries out slightly and cutting is no problem, at least for the 2 recipes we regularly use!
Faline
My homemade bread is a LOT less crumbly when I use an electric knife. It makes a BIG difference.
