Penelope
Can anyone tell me a comprehensive grammar handbook for me to have on hand? I am thinking of something that is easy to use for any questions that come up incidentally, like definitions or correct usage. Thanks in advance! PeterPan
Abeka, BJU, R&S all have handbooks. The Blue Book has free online listings just like the book. (Blue Book of Grammar) I use a book from college, so I'm no help.
Guest Alte Veste Academy
I personally love Nitty-Gritty Grammar and More Nitty-Gritty Grammar. They're fun and functional. http://www.amazon.com/Nitty-Gritty-Grammar-Not-So-Serious-Guide-Communication/dp/0898159660/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230398892&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/More-Nitty-Gritty-Grammar-Edith-Hope/dp/1580082289/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b Kristina
SonshineLearner
Our Mother Tongue is one that I've heard recommended. Ccarrie:-)
Carol in Cal.
It is succinct and to the point, with lots of worked out examples of diagrams. I think that it is more helpful for a newbie than Our Mother Tongue would be. OMT would be better for a general review for someone already pretty knowledgeable. jabuford
I saw it at http://www.rocksolidinc.com It says that S. Bauer recommends in the TWTM. It was $8.
PeterPan
The Elements of Style is good, but it's not a grammar or writing handbook.
kalanamak
It is an online source, but I find these people interesting and often get my answer: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/ It is a big site, so if you find any real gems, let me know. MgoBlue
I'm seconding Elements of Style by Strunk & White; again; not a writing handbook but very succinct.
Testimony
You see, I use the Elements of Style by Strunk and White. I had it when I was in college. I used it as my handbook. I also have a book by Random House called Correct Grammar and Usage (I think). They are both very tiny books that fit in your pocket. However, they are very informative thorough and explain every grammar usage in the English language. I hope that's what you wanted. May the Lord bless your new year. Sincerely, Karen http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/testimony
sagira
I agree, Elements of Style is great. I also own the following to help with writing: Writing: A Concise Handbook, The Way to Write by Rudolf Flesch (McGraw Hill 1947) and When Words Collide by Laura Kessler et al. What's nice about these is that you get some at flea markets, library sales or freebies.
