Have the silkies been pets for you? If so, I am sorry.

I grew up on a farm and thinning the flock was just what was done. You’ll still probably get a couple of pounds of meat per bird for stewing. I’d rather keep birds that’ll lay if I am having to pay feed costs. Pasturing the flock only helps so much in keeping them fed.

Yes the silkies are pets.

Silky meat is a purple black colour. Not nice to eat. I remember when I was a child my mum cooked up a silkies once. We were very poor and hungry. None of us could eat purple black meat. Even mum couldn't.

I have read that in China it is considered a part  cure for going grey

Silkies are used for tonic soup for Chinese everywhere.
Recipe (1) and (3) are comfort foods, never tried (2) https://www.homemade-chinese-soups.com/black-chickens.html

My side of the family had tried fried crickets in Thailand.
