Absolute, cannot miss middle school literature?

For middle school, do you mean gr. 5-8 age range, or just gr. 7-8 age range? And, how strong/weak of a reader is this for, and how high/low interest does the student have in fiction and literature? Knowing all that would adjust what I suggest.

In general, I really like literature for middle school (what I classify as gr. 7-8) as a time to move slowly into a few classics, but to also introduce short stories; do YA books that were very discussion-able; and include diversity of "voices" / culture / viewpoint.

That said, here are a few ideas:

upper elementary/younger middle school
- A Wrinkle in Time (L'Engle)
- The Chronicles of Narnia (Lewis)
- Tuck Everlasting (Babbit)
- Sounder (Armstrong) -- dog dies!
- The Cay  (Taylor)
- The Westing Game (Raskin)

older middle school
- Eagle of the Ninth (Sutcliffe)
- The Bronze Bow (George)
- Island of the Blue Dolphins (O'Dell)
- The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle (Avi)

- Maniac Magee  (Spinnelli)
- I Am David (Holm)
- The Great and Terrible Quest (Lovett)
- Harry Potter series (Rowling)
- Holes (Sachar)
- A Long Walk to Water (Park)

beginning classics (gr. 7/8, or possibly younger if a strong reader):
- Five Children and It (Nesbit)
- Wondertales, and, Tanglewood Tales (Hawthorne)
- The Hobbit (Tolkien)
- Call of the Wild (London)
- The Outsiders (Hinton)
- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Carroll)
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Twain)
- Around the World in 80 Days (Verne)
- Ivanhoe (Scott)
- Treasure Island (Stevenson)
- Sherlock Holmes short story mysteries (Doyle)

It’s so hard to say, because you never know what is going to strike a child’s heart. My husband, for example, didn’t like reading at all until 6th grade when a teacher handed him “Island of the Blue Dolphins.” It turned him into a life-long reader!

I think for that reason it’s good to try a diverse selection of genres on your kid if you are just looking for straight-up great fiction. I can tell you that a middle school I worked at always taught “The Giver” and many students loved that book. “The Outsiders” was always taught as well, though reactions to that were more mixed. Those are both pretty important works, and short enough to get through without too much trouble. Obviously, the people above provided you some amazing lists too, but I thought I’d specifically call out those three books 🙂
