VictoriaLovesABiscuit
Hi, I am considering Rod and Staff English. It looks great, my only concern is the Christianity element. We are a pagan household. We do have some resources with an occasional mention of the Christian god in. That is okay, we explain it is a different religion the same as we we do for when something comes about the ancient Egyptian gods. Has anyone used it as a secular curriculum? Explaining it is just another religion? Could it work? Is it preachy? Thank you!
freesia
I wouldn’t call it preachy. However, the first lesson does bring religion into the study of language. That is easily skipped. Many, many of the sentences used are from the Bible. Others reflect Mennonite lifestyle or values, which do include Biblical values. So, as pagans, it would probably not really work. Your children will not know the stories or places referenced. It will all seem rather random.
Lecka
I am totally just throwing this out there, but maybe Saxon Grammar?
Green Bean
You will not be able to use R&S as a secular household. Every sentence example, every lesson oozes Christianity. You are better off seeking a fully secular resource like: Saxon Writing & Grammar (Rainbow Resource has a monolpoly on the only reasonable pricing.) https://www.rainbowresource.com/category/6746/Grammar-and-Writing.html Growing With Grammar https://jackrispublishing.com/collections/growing-with-grammar Loyola Press Voyages in English (a close 2nd in WTM rec's.) https://loyolapress.com/ Loyola Press Exercises in English https://loyolapress.com/ MCT Lang Arts https://www.rfwp.com/mct-language-arts/
lulalu
The chapter explanations are the best I have used. But each practice set of sentences, each poem used, and examples are full of Bible verses or Christian related content. If you are willing to do work before the beginning of the year you probably could provide other sentences to use in the exercises.
VictoriaLovesABiscuit
Thank you, I don't think R&S will work then, unfortunately. I didn't know saxon did a grammar program, I've tried to watch some videos on youtube and can't find much. I also like the look of voyagers in english, quite literally judging a book by its cover. Any recommendations of places where I can find some flip throughs or reviews?!
