Navy Bean soup....what am I missing.

Recommended Posts

I do not have ham or bacon so that's out.

what I did so far in the crockpot I have:

navy beans

2cups vegetable broth plus 4 cups water and 2 chicken bullion

sauteed onion, carrots and celery in butter and added to the crockpot

I put in lawry's seasoning, celery powder, italian seasoning, parsley, salt and pepper.

What else can or should I add or will this be hearty and flavorful?

For Navy Bean Soup

first I boil celery, and onion in lots of turkey broth with two bay leaves for at least an hour. Then I remove the bay leaves. Add the beans when the beans are almost cooked I add some grated carrots and crispy bacon and chopped cooked turkey( a little goes a long way). Let it all simmer until cooked than shortly before serving I add two to three table spoons of tomatoe paste for color and flavor.

When I make Northern Bean Soup, I put in 2 c. of mashed potatoes and 8 oz. of tomato sauce, in addition to what you put in your Navy Bean Soup.

(I also put in a ham bone with lots of ham on it.)

If navy beans are a good substitute for Great Northern beans, you could try that.

The soup I make is basically the homemade version of Campbell's bean soup, to give you an idea of what it would turn out like. The mashed potatoes thicken the broth.
