lynn
I do not have ham or bacon so that's out. what I did so far in the crockpot I have: navy beans 2cups vegetable broth plus 4 cups water and 2 chicken bullion sauteed onion, carrots and celery in butter and added to the crockpot I put in lawry's seasoning, celery powder, italian seasoning, parsley, salt and pepper. What else can or should I add or will this be hearty and flavorful?
NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
I add it to all my bean soups and red beans & rice. http://www.amazon.com/Lazy-Kettle-Brand-Natural-Liquid/dp/B000I552GE/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1228401998&sr=8-1 You can find it at your grocery store - in the bbq/condiments section. hth K
Once
You could add chicken or turkey leftovers (from the freezer of course). It would be a little like white bean chili soup. Then add grated cheese at the end or some sour cream. Nothing is better than soup when it's cold!
Parrothead
Ham or a ham bone if you have one. Thanks for the reminder. I've got to get my beans in the pot and boiling soon.
Quiver0f10
I'd add some potatoes, maybe peas and corn and a can of crushed tomatoes. Sort of like a ministrone. Yummm!
Tammyla
Wow, I never thought of this and it sounds so yummy. I'm making black-eyed peas with a ham bone today, but this is on my list for next time. I'd add some potatoes, maybe peas and corn and a can of crushed tomatoes. Sort of like a ministrone. Yummm! Jen in PA
I always add a couple of bay leaves to my bean soups. It makes a world of difference. Sometimes I add rosemary when I have fresh around. I often add a splash of good vinegar (red wine or balsamic) if I think it needs some acidity at the end of cooking. Cherrie
For Navy Bean Soup first I boil celery, and onion in lots of turkey broth with two bay leaves for at least an hour. Then I remove the bay leaves. Add the beans when the beans are almost cooked I add some grated carrots and crispy bacon and chopped cooked turkey( a little goes a long way). Let it all simmer until cooked than shortly before serving I add two to three table spoons of tomatoe paste for color and flavor.
RoughCollie
When I make Northern Bean Soup, I put in 2 c. of mashed potatoes and 8 oz. of tomato sauce, in addition to what you put in your Navy Bean Soup. (I also put in a ham bone with lots of ham on it.) If navy beans are a good substitute for Great Northern beans, you could try that. The soup I make is basically the homemade version of Campbell's bean soup, to give you an idea of what it would turn out like. The mashed potatoes thicken the broth. mellifera
If you want your soup to be thicker you could ladle out about a cup or so of beans, puree them, and add them back to the soup.
