I know right?1  Instead of thinking of myself as fat or obese, I prefer to say that I am giving a home to a reasonable number of adipose.

I would gladly incubate some baby adipose. (DH got me a stuffed one).

I also asked multiple times what word would be preferable, as I truly do try to stop using terms that are offensive to people, and shift my language in a "when you know better, do better" approach. But they didn't answer, just said I was clinging to my preconceived bias. Given that, I'm not looking to get clarification from them...sigh. But thought maybe the hive would know if this is a wider thing, and if so, if there is another, accepted term?

I think you are misunderstanding their position, or they are not doing a good job of explaining it.

Their position (not that I agree with it), is that there is nothing wrong with being morbidly obese, and that any word or term you might use, medical, cultural, slang or otherwise, for this condition is fat shaming and should be avoided.  So, it isn't that any one particular word is wrong, you just aren't supposed to talk about this at all, that they are offended by any term you might use.

Ah...that does seem to be their position! I makes so little sense I didn't even think of that.
