Elizabeth86
We did abeka for phonics for grade 1 and we loved it. So far, grade 2 is just like grade 1 all over again. I'm not sure he needs phonics all over again like this. I am sure it wouldn't hurt him to review, but it seems like he remembers it all so I shorten what we review a bit. So, tell me , after abeka phonics 1' how did you teach abeka phonics for grade 2?
purpleowl
At some point during A Beka's 1st grade material, all of my kids have had reading "click" well so that they can pretty much read whatever they come across. So after finishing that, I don't continue with formal phonics instruction. Instead, we read books, and I explain new special sounds as we come across them.
JazzyMom
I only used A Beka Phonics 2 with my struggling reader. With the others, we stopped after either phonics K or phonics 1. I stop teaching phonics once rhey are reading fluently.
ByGrace3
After Abeka Grade 1 Phonics I switched my dd to Explode the Code for reinforcement.
nixpix5
Are you using the version with 2 separate workbooks (like with level 1) or the new combined workbook? I find the 2 seperate workbooks are a whole lot of grade 1 repeating. The new combined workbook I find to be so much better. It has more grammar introduction. ElizabethB
Word Mastery is free from Don Potter and goes to a 3rd grade level. http://www.donpotter.net/pdf/word_mastery_typed.pdf He also sells a printed copy in manuscript or cursive, and has some other free supplements for it here: http://www.donpotter.net/education_pages/WordMastery.html Phonics Pathways goes up to a 4th grade level and is inexpensive and most libraries have it. You could also work through my Syllables Class and then the rest of Webster's Speller, phonics to a 12th grade level, free to print: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On Reading/syllablesspellsu.html
...................
It's not all review, it adds more at the end. IDK If I could go back, I'd do another whole year or two of phonics for my struggling speller who also struggles with sounding out new words. All the gentle repetition does help things stick, long term, and they do add in a lot more difficulty at the end. Even when we life the intensive phonics program (a decision I regret, we used on very similar to Abeka - CLP_ so that's why I really understand how you feel) we still followed up for second grade with Explode the Code paired with Phonics Pathways. So, even if you decide to end it with Abeka I definitely would continue with phonics for a whole year, and Explode the Code and Phonics Pathways is a little easier, a little less seatwork and you can cuddle on the couch while you go through Phonics Pathways together.
