Daria
My son got an email from the college he'll start in August, with a list of his rooommates and their contact info, and also a list of things to bring and not bring. The list of things not to bring included all the things you'd expect (the following is a small subset) Pets Firearms Nunchuks Deep fryer Drum set Drugs Alcohol Nails (if you plan to use them on the walls) and Halogen bulbs. What am I missing that is so alarming about halogen bulbs?
klmama
They can be a fire hazard because they get extra hot. Curtains or bedding coming in contact with one could quickly start to burn.
Targhee
Yes, heat. Burned a hole through my down comforter from a small desk lamp ? Lucky I caught it before it went up in flames!
Daria
Got it, I haven't used one but it just seemed like such an innocuous thing next to the rest of the list. Good to know there's a reason.
Mergath
Yup. Halogen bulbs are actually what they use in electric wax warmers (or all the ones I've seen, anyway) because they get so hot they melt the wax.
nixpix5
When I was a teen my parents had the tall, thin lamps that took halogen light bulbs that acted as dimmers. They were all the rage back in the day. My little brother tilted one on its side to use as a light while he played Legos. He left some plastic near it and it started a fire. It was pretty awful. The fireman told us that halogen fires are common because they can heat up over 900 degrees. I have never looked to see if that was accurate but I have been worried about them ever since. katilac
They also tend to shatter when broken, creating a mess far beyond the ability of most college students to clean up ?
