Rush
Please bear with me today, I have lots of questions in my head and suddenly a little time to prepare for the next year :) I remember I heard that this program is very deep and great for a development of the mathematical mind. Is someone of you using it? I am choosing between Pre-algebra AoPS and Teaching Textbooks.
wapiti
I remember I heard that this program is very deep and great for a development of the mathematical mind. Is someone of you using it? I am choosing between Pre-algebra AoPS and Teaching Textbooks. You must be thinking of AoPS. The reputation of Teaching Textbooks is not deep and not great for the development of the mathematical mind. These programs are opposites.
Rush
ooohh :scared: For some reasons I had an impression that someone with an advance maths kid from our group was very happy with that program. Thank you!
wapiti
Well, someone might be happy with using Teaching Textbooks for various reasons. But, it is definitely not known for depth.
Upennmama
No, not at all. AOPS is probably what you're thinking of.
kiwik
Although there is a teachers forum I found that claimed AOPS PA was best for remedial students because it lacked the "real life" problems needed by advanced students. One of the strangest comments I have seen about AOPS.
SoCal_Bear
Unless their scope and sequence changed since I looked a couple of years ago, TT's Algebra 1 doesn't cover quadratic equations. That speaks volumes to meI have a friend who used TT with her older two who are in college now and switched to Jacob's with her following two. She said it's like night and day in the depth of coverage. Edited September 9, 2017 by calbear
kiwik
ooohh :scared: For some reasons I had an impression that someone with an advance maths kid from our group was very happy with that program. Thank you! Maybe they are advanced on paper because their programme is too easy.
CadenceSophia
I do remember seeing threads where people used TT Algebra as a pre-algebra program. Maybe that was the mixup.
goldberry
I know TT is not known for depth. But I just had to throw in that I had a kid who hated math before we switched to TT. She loved math afterwards and even considered math as a major. She scored 750 out of 800 on her math SAT section. Just FYI! Different Strokes for different folks... We were using Saxon and switched to TT at pre-algebra. Edited September 11, 2017 by goldberry
Rush
Thanks for everyone for your helpful comments. In the end I think I had a mistake. It's not Teaching Textbooks I was thinking about, but Elements of Mathematics Foundation. What about this one? To be honest I have decided that DS takes AoPS. We looked at the book and he left very satisfied with it, but I would still love to hear any comments about that program. Who know maybe once I will decide taking it for my little one :)
