Research paper - when to start?

Is there particular grade level where you feel that research paper writing skills should be covered? I'm wondering if this is a skill we should be cover for 8th grade or if it would be better to put it off until high school.

I would begin in 7th and continue through high school requiring incrementally more independent work, longer papers, and higher expectations every year.

Where I live it is a typical grade 10-12 thing.

We do writing before that though.

I've done it about 10th/11th. Granted my oldest is quite dysgraphic so that skewed my timeline for my oldest and influenced what I will do with the next ones. I'm sure my third and fourth kids will also wait until in high school.

Our R&S English began introducing taking notes and organizing them in the 8th grade book. I thought it funny, but it never followed through with actually writing the paper. But there were exercises on the notes and outlines. 

 

WWS ends with one, so that would depend on when you do that program. We did it for 9th, but WTM has you working through it earlier.

 

So somewhere around 8th and up is a good time to start some short ones.

We started in 8th grade doing a very basic one.  For 9th grade dd will do a more in depth paper and then in 10th and even more in depth paper.  We are using IEW's How to Write a Research Paper (at least I think that is what it is called)
