whiteisle
Is there a history text or even a list of history books appropriate for 3rd grade that is NOT a all-inclusive curriculum like HOD or MFW. I'm just looking to get my new 3rd grader casually acquainted with some history (US, World, etc...not picky at this point) Story of the World is not an option for us as I don't care for it. If it matters, my older two are doing Notgrass' America the Beautiful so perhaps keeping everyone in US history would be nice. I have Squanto Friend of the Pilgrims and Stories of Great Americans....what else do you think might keep a young boy's attention?
SoCal_Bear
Maybe The Complete Book of US History. https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Book-United-States-History/dp/1561896799 Right grade level, colorful, inexpensive.

mytwomonkeys
When my kids were that age we used Adventures in America. We really enjoyed it. https://elementalscience.com/collections/adventures-in-america The optional read alouds & additional library book recommendations were some of our favorites 😊 ETA- Here's a peek at the TM with list of books and TOC: http://d3r1z7wkgqhj9d.cloudfront.net/AA%20Sample.pdf Edited June 10, 2017 by mytwomonkeys

carriede
My DS8 flips through the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History for fun. If you look at the Sonlight website, core D has an American history book list for that age. I enjoy The American Story series by Betsy Maestro. Here's one of them: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0688160158/ref=gwm_tlc_pi?pf_rd_p=62af779f-88df-4dd0-be50-91c6a4b9661a&pf_rd_s=grid-6&pf_rd_t=Gateway&pf_rd_i=mobile&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=3PSV7GSW1Q2E9B93VZPN&pf_rd_r=3PSV7GSW1Q2E9B93VZPN&pf_rd_p=62af779f-88df-4dd0-be50-91c6a4b9661a&pd_rd_i=0688160158 Another overview option is A Child's History of the World. It's world history in one volume, not 4 like SOTW.
Zoo Keeper
You could just read the history portions of What Your 3rd Grader Needs to Know (most libraries have it, or it is very cheap used) and add in library books as needed or wanted. The series has a decent flow of world and American history and geography. Core Knowledge also has free history/geo books that you could download...https://www.coreknowledge.org/curriculum/download-curriculum/?grade_filter%5B0%5D=328&grade_filter%5B%5D=34#filter-wrapper My very picky reader enjoyed using some CK books for his history this year. I was pleasantly surprised. :)

ktgrok
Pioneers and Patriots is fun. It's stories about children in various times in history...so starts with children coming to St. Augustine from Spain as an example. http://www.shopchristianliberty.com/american-pioneers-and-patriots-2nd-ed/
Bay Lake Mom
We did a casual year of history this year. I personally do not like SOTW and I didn't want a big history program. We read through a lot of biographies (ex. Who Was xxxxxxx? Series) and the If You Lived at the Time of / If You Wew There When series. We also read some historical fiction such as the older American Girl books. We all learned a lot from these books. I wanted to introduce them to some famous people and events in history, and it was a success.

Insertcreativenamehere
Maybe The Complete Book of US History. We used this book last year and added historical fiction, additional non-fiction, documentaries and field trips. It was a great year!
