MomatHWTK
It really is "bated" not "baited." I never would have guessed. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/bated
TranquilMind
It really is "bated" not "baited." I never would have guessed. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/bated I knew this, but always smile when I see it written as "baited" in outlets where they really should know better. "Baited" kind of makes logical sense.
Jean in Newcastle
Of course? Why would you bait breath? And what would you use as bait?
Tanaqui
Of course. We abate our breath because... well, I don't know why people hold their breath, but anyway.
Emba
Yes, and actually I always get a pretty funny mental image when I see "baited breath" of someone with a worm dangling in their mouth...
historically accurate
Yes, and actually I always get a pretty funny mental image when I see "baited breath" of someone with a worm dangling in their mouth... I always think of the Get Fuzzy cartoon where the owner tells Bucky to go chew on the toilet brush because he has "chum breath". I think that is what baited breath would smell like. http://www.gocomics.com/getfuzzy/2001/05/27
