Tawlas
?! You are not hallucinating. I see it, too! Because they now have a 7th edition? I'm not sure, but I've downloaded it. Thanks :D
carriede
Just like the one I used in college. Thanks for the tip!
Hunter
I'm very excited about this. Not as excited as when the revised Alpha-Phonics went free, but pretty darn excited. There is a lot of free community built up around Wheelock. With a free book, I would only expect that to grow.
Guest
This is the same edition I have. I was rather disgusted with myself when I realized that it was all I really needed instead of all the Martha Wilson Latin primers I had spent so much money on over the years. I share your excitement and look forward to tapping into that community.
Zoo Keeper
Well, thanks to that great link, I now have Wheelock's sitting on my Kindle--for FREE! I also have the answer key on the Kindle -- also FREE! Seriously, this is like an early Christmas present for me. :) Peace on earth! Goodwill toward men!

Trilliumlady
So I have one edition of this sitting on my shelf but have never really looked at it. What ages have you all used it for and what would you say sets it above any other programs floating out there?
Hunter
So I have one edition of this sitting on my shelf but have never really looked at it. What ages have you all used it for and what would you say sets it above any other programs floating out there? I don't know think It is the best book, but it is an excellent book. The entire grammar is included in ONE book, not several. The author from the beginning insisted that his book be kept affordable and it never got included in the crazy textbook price hikes, making it more and more popular over the years as the prices of other books rose so quickly. Now it is actually FREE. Publishers, software makers, teachers, and website owners have all produced a lot of supplementary materials. We can start linking to some of them in this thread. With the publication of Getting Started with Latin, after completing GSWT, more people will be able to jump straight into Wheelock, skipping the more expensive stuff marketed to homeschoolers. Those of us that are used to teaching from concise books and making up our own practice as we go along, applying lessons to real life, and supplementing with free vintage resources, will be able to use this after GSWT for even very young children. Those that have to fill in worksheets and only do exactly what they are told, would struggle with this text for the wee ones. This book was written for college students and when used exactly as written, it moves too fast, and is too inapplicable to the daily life of the littles. Wheelock has a larger vocabulary than the Caesar based grammars. I am a fan of those small vocabulary Caesar-prep grammars, but I can adapt to this textbook as my core text. Special attention will need to be devoted to vocabulary retention, and a slower acquisition of grammar will be required. That is worth it though, to know any student can just download the text for free and with no shipping, and take advantage of a large online community of support. I know for many others, this is more exciting that Alpha-Phonics going free. It is secondary for me, but...you all know that Sam is my hero. Wheelock isn't far behind, now, though. I was just thinking if I would rather Henle was free. No. Even though there are things I personally prefer about Henle, I think having Wheelock available has more potential for good. If I was in charge of picking for everyone, I'd pick Wheelock. Wheelock can be made to work for Homeschoolers. People can figure out what to supplement chapter by chapter for the littles, and share those ideas. The answer key for this edition isn't locked or password protected and can be handed around. Please be careful with it though. When it gets out to the general public, it really has been a disruption to brick and mortar schools, leading to students getting expelled and failed. First do no harm.
Hunter
I think I would like to become as efficient at teaching Wheelock, as I have Alpha-Phonics and Spalding handwriting. I think I would just like to be able to do that. I'm not saying all students should learn Latin, or that a Latin centered curriculum is best. I'm just saying that I think I would like to be able to tutor Wheelock. I had mostly taken a break from tutoring, and I'm still not ready to jump back in yet. This winter would be a good time to strengthen my own Latin skills and learn Wheelock specifically. I really think I just want to hunker down this winter and master this book. And then see where that leads in the spring.
Hunter
Okay, starting with the links. Udemy has Wheelock videos. Sign up for Udemy. Put the courses on your wishlist and let them sit there for a bit. Udemy will offer you a course at half price or maybe even $10.00. https://www.udemy.com/user/benlugosch/ If you don't have home wifi like me, if you have a device that can download the app, you can download the videos offline and bring them home to watch. If you cannot afford Udemy even at $10/$15, there are lots of free videos at YouTube.
Hunter
The 6th edition and the 7th are not that different. Drill and vocabulary are usually the same; resources designed for the 7th are fine to use with the 6th. Hunter
This website was popular with oldschoolers using Wheelock with the littles. Unfortunately there isn't an answer key for most exercises. http://www.slu.edu/colleges/AS/languages/classical/latin/tchmat/wh-prax.html Dale Grote Study Guide. Another blast from the past. http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/Wheelock-Latin/ Edited December 15, 2016 by Hunter
Zoo Keeper
Is the answer key part of the same download or a separate one? It is a separate download, not part of Hunter's original link. I found the link to teacher's materials through the Wheelock's website.
