Dr. Hive -- pink eye?? bacterial, viral

Last Friday evening, after a week as a youth camp assistant, my 14 year old complained that one of her eyes was watery and it appeared slightly reddish. The next morning, it was crusted shut and the eyelid was very swollen. Off to the doc we went and got a prescription antibiotic eye drop for the one eye. By the end of the day the swelling was gone and the redness was gone. So, we guessed it was bacterial. She stayed on the medicine all week (per doc instructions) although 1-2x mentioned some blurriness. Last night it appeared her eye was slightly glassy and this morning she woke up with 2 red eyes and both crusted shut. Now, they just look very watery and pink.

And it is a holiday week-end.

We could wait it out a few days and see if it will go away on its own because it is viral.

Take her to her regular physician for a second opinion.

Take her to an eye specialist.

She didnt' attend karate today because of it but I don't want to keep her in the house for weeks if this may take that long to get better because it is viral.

WWYD.

Thanks.

I don't know your family dynamics, but you have an breastmilk?  That stuff cures an eye infection in a hurry.  We've never had it take more than 24 hours.

However, because she was at camp, and could have picked up who knows what (from a lake?), I'd probably get her checked out and see if they will culture it.  I would want to make sure we knew what it was, especially since it came right back, and spread to the other eye.  (Though pink eye does spread like wild fire.)

Sorry, to clarify, it was karate camp so it was a day-camp in her karate school where the were mostly inside but occasionally went to the neighborhood school playground. I mentioned it only because she had a lot of kids hanging all over her :) so I'm assuming she got it from there.

Breast feeding lasted about nine years but ended about 7 years ago so that isn't an option. :)

I'm more concerned with the fact that we thought it was gone but now is back again.

Were you changing pillowcases and towels daily? Washing hands thoroughly? You can reinfect yourself pretty easily. I wouldn't want to mess around with eyes. If your ped has an on-call number, can you see what they suggest? They may want to culture the goop or have some other ideas for you.

Maybe this; Has it gone from one eye to the other and back again? Do you have any drops left? Read online about contagion, keeping clean towels, washing hands etc. and use drops in both eyes, call the doctor on Monday.

That was my first thought.  She reinfected herself.

How do you know it is viral?  Could actually be something new.  I would treat again.  Eyes are nothing to mess with.

When I've had bacterial pink eye, my eye hasn't been particularly pink, but the goopiness was overwhelming.  It wasn't just crusted shut need a warm wash cloth in the morning, it was a constant film of greenish mucous that made it impossible for me to read, drive, etc . . . There was no mistaking it for viral pink eye, which is my experience has much pinker eyes,  much more itching, but mostly teariness that might build up to crust overnight, but doesn't impact vision by day.

Given the season, I'd have to add allergic pink eye to the list of possibilities.  Does she have other allergies?

I just had viral pink eye a couple of weeks ago. I agree with Daria about the symptoms--no goop, but very pink, itchy eyes. If it's viral it goes away on its own but it gets better and then it flares a bit occasionally.

I'd try the drops if you still have them. If not or if they don't work quickly, I'd go to an urgent care.
