poetic license Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 (edited) Does anyone have experience with Groovy Kids Online classes? I have registered my son for this one and was wondering if anyone had any feedback about their classes: http://www.onlineclassesforgroovykids.org/the-disappearing-spoon.html Edited June 21, 2016 by poetic license 1 Quote
Dmmetler Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I don't know anything about them, but that Fantastic Beasts class sounds right up DD's alley! 1 Quote
fourisenough Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 No experience, but I certainly love all the courses they have lined up for fall. May yet enroll... Quote
fourisenough Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Bumping this thread to get some more feedback and raise awareness of this interesting option for secular, inter-disciplinary online classes for 11-15 year olds. Did anyone take a class with them this year? My niece is finishing the Fantastic Beasts class right now. She is in PS and is doing the class for after schooling (although, since she's on PST, she takes the class VERY early before school). It has been such a great experience for her that's she's begging her mom to homeschool her next year. My sister has been impressed with the extensive feedback/detailed notes niece has received on her papers. Niece tells her mom that "homeschool classes are SO much harder than PS!" I'm really interested in a couple classes for my DD12 for next school year: Made You Look, In Your Face, and Omnivore's Dilemma. Take a look: http://www.onlineclassesforgroovykids.org/index.html Quote

fourisenough Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 No, her schedule was too full with year-long courses. However, niece (mentioned above), is taking The Disappearing Spoon this semester and LOVES it! I just wish there were more hours in the day... 1 Quote
Aurelia Posted November 24, 2017 Posted November 24, 2017 They look neat. I'm considering Sparkers for DD next semester. I've been looking for something with literature and civics/social studies. Quote
PinkyandtheBrains. Posted November 24, 2017 Posted November 24, 2017 I’ve only heard positive reviews Quote
LAR Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 We've taken Stowaway and the Cacao class. Our daughter loved both of them. She liked having the opportunity to speak at each class and present her ideas and opinions. The weekly assignments were always fun and educational bringing in a wide range of subjects. Quote
kiwik Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Bother Stowaway is on our reading list this year but they are not running it. Ds is too young though. Quote
Aurelia Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 I signed DD up for Sparkers. I hope she likes it! Quote
Eos Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 DD4 who just turned 13 loved the Fantastic Beasts class. The format is really easy to connect with - the teacher did a careful orientation to the platform before the class began. None of my older kids had ever taken an on-line class before, so this was new to me. She enjoyed seeing the other scholars during class time. The text, articles, and videos were totally engaging. The class had traditional assignments and due dates but it seems to have sparked a new level of self-motivation for her which has also increased her confidence. As she dug into the course, she became more motivated to be creative and thorough with the Challenge Missions, which allow for a variety of learning styles. She's taking another one in the spring, I wish she had more time to do more! We may re-format her 8th grade next year to take advantage of more of these courses. 1 Quote
Aurelia Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Just FYI, she canceled all her spring courses to deal with a family medical crisis. Maybe we'll be able to try one out over the summer, or something. Quote
Eos Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Yes, we are sad. She suggested a few other options, but I think we'll just wait til she's up and running again. New thread: we bought the WTM grammar download and dd is plowing it under, she loves it. Quote

LAR Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 You can try Open Tent Academy. Ms Eva is offering tons of great classes this semester. Quote
LAR Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Or even outschool.com. DD12 just took a mindfulness for tweens class today and loved it. She can't wait for the next 3 classes. Quote
