LoveChocolate
My child just left high school to homeschool. This student wants to go into engineering or math and was in AP Calc. We found out that the school classes for Geometry/Pre-Calculus were weak. So, I want to find a way to strengthen math and move forward at the same time. Meaning, I'm thinking about doing self-paced AOPS contest prep that forces discovering gaps, then filling them. But at the same time, moving forward with Calc in a self-paced class. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is for a kid who needs a strong math background for engineering, so I don't want programs that just get you through math. I want programs that really help you to learn the math if you complete it. I'd prefer programs that have lots of video help and/or a teacher you can email. Thanks for any suggestions! Luckymama
Have you considered Derek Owens classes? They are self-paced (though he does give a suggested syllabus) with teacher support and grading. I'd link but I'm on my phone--it's www.derekowens.com

I doubt that AOPS contest prep will be what you want. ASU has a nice PreCalc assessment test which shows you if you are ready for Calculus. For now I would locate Calculus placement tests on the web and use those to identify weaknesses in his PreCalc. Then use Kahn Academy to help fill those gaps. Lots of folks here like Derek Owens for math. freesia
I think I would do something like Aleks https://www.aleks.com/independentto fill in the gaps. I don't think that AOPS will do what you want.
kiana
Consider a book like this -- http://www.amazon.com/Just-Algebra-Trigonometry-Calculus-Edition/dp/032167104X
Julie of KY
I was also going to suggest Derek Owens for calculus. It is self-paced so you can move through anything already covered, take breaks as needs to learn other stuff, etc. I'm not sure AoPS is what you need to fill in holes. Maybe Kahn academy? or look to someone else for suggestions in filling in gaps.
cjzimmer1
I was also going to suggest Aleks. While I didn't use for high school, I found it very helpful at the lower levels to give extra practice in area of weakness but let them skip over what they already know. Won't help you in live teacher part but at least it could let you identify what areas you need to shore up.
