Roadrunner
He has had little problem getting through the first 7 chapters until we hit challenging problems on rates. He did all of the chapter seven, plus summary problems, but can't handle the challenging section. What do I do? Skip them and come back when he is oldest, work the problems on a whiteboard with him..... Is this what's going to be happening going forward or is chapter seven special? He is 10, if that helps. crazyforlatin
Mine is 10, and I pick the ones that are doable, the rest I save for another day, meaning I may never get back to it. I do use Foerster when we are having a heavy week. DD needs the practice, anyway. She does better with AOPS when it's not a day to day thing.
regentrude
I recall that my DS had problems with chapter 7 as well. If I recall correctly,we skipped it, moved on, and then returned to the difficult sections a few months later without issues.
Roadrunner
So skip over and keep moving? He got through about half of challenging section.
EndOfOrdinary
I have found my son gets a total mental glitch once he decides the problems are hard - too hard. It does not make them too hard, but in his head he is just blocked and it all falls apart. So we skip and then cycle back. I keep note of the ones that we do not do, and we do cycle back. Often times we will cycle back when a future chapter causes some hic-ups. This boosts confidence and helps both with keeping pace and making sure we never get back to the sticky problems.
kiana
Skipping and cycling back is a very useful skill to learn for future math classes as well. It's something my college students at ALL levels struggle with.
AEC
FWIW, we've had a similar experience w/ AoPS Alg. Ch 1-6 were no problem - a section / day, high percentages correct, etc. Ch 7's word problems were not getting through and Ch8 is also proving difficult. Some chapters are just harder. Suggest you slow down, but also don't spend forever there - at some point you have to move on and expect to cycle back.
Guest Kigazuki
My daughter (11) had not much problems till chapter 9 but now chapter 10 she needs help with almost every problem? What do I do?
Roadrunner
Just coming back to say that we set aside about half of the challenging set from chapter 7 and moved on. Chapter 8, 9, and 10 so far has been very smooth sailing, so we will go back to chapter 7 challenges once we are through at least half of the book.
Embassy
We did chapter 7 over again and the second time through it clicked.
