So we went to NC and gave a wedding gift instead of going to Paris, and dh is a bit bummed that vacation this year isn't all that interesting.

He'd like to do something in a place he hasn't been--and he's been to most East coast places, plus south and New England and OH/PA. Michigan seems awfully far...

Suggestions?

History, light hiking, prob no beach...IDK, inexpensive, drive less than 10 hours?

Have you been to the Finger Lakes? It's lovely and it's one of those places that I, as a well-traveled East Coaster, had never been to until we had to go for dh's family. You can go to Corning, which has the glass museum. Or to Ithaca, which is really beautiful. There's some different possibilities.

Or, it's maybe a little far, but you can make it to Toronto in not much more than that. It's like a whole other country... because it is. Great museums, great food. Or Montreal is also not so much farther than that. And that really feels like another country because people are speaking French.

Or... Other direction... Have you ever been to Joyce Kilmer National Forest? It's like a tiny west coast forest hidden on the top of a single mountain in NC. They didn't log their way up the mountain so the trees have never been cut ever. You've never seen anything else like it on the east coast. You can stay in Fontana Dam and it's touristy, but nice. You could stop in Asheville and go to Biltmore on the way... Or that's another trip. Have you ever been to Biltmore?

Savannah? Charleston? Nice in the fall...

I love the idea of Toronto...

For less than an hour or so of drive time you could probably add on a stop in Pittsburgh, an underrated east coast destination. The Cathedral of Learning and Heinz Chapel are both worth a visit. Pittsburgh is a neat city I'd like to be able to explore more.

If Toronto and/or Montreal appeal to you, you could easily do a road trip along Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River to have a gorgeous trip.  The St Lawrence is a gorgeous blue color on a sunny day - the color kids would color "blue" in a picture.  The 1000 Islands are along your way as are several charming river towns (Kingston, Brockville, etc).

You could easily make a loop and return via the Adirondacks and Catskills or through the Green Mountains of VT.

It's a gorgeous road trip with ample options of things to do along the way - all pending your preferences.

Finger Lakes is beautiful... it may just break into the 10hr road trip though.  But, we loved it.  Lots of lovely places to hike.  There's also Grand Canyon of the East - Letchworth State park.  We stayed at a rental outside of Pen Yan and it was quite nice.

Have you been to Monongahela or Dolly Sods in WV?  Tons of hiking in Dolly Sods.  It is a long trek on a dirt road to get into Dolly Sods, but so worth it.  We usually camp (rustic - no hook up and bring your own water).   We just went in June.  While camping up in Dolly Sods someone told us about a great sounding camping ground down in the valley on a bend in the river.  You can put your tubes in on one side of the camp ground and go down the river for a good while and get out on the other side of the camp ground! LOL  That's my type of tubing.    It's also near Seneca Rocks.   There's also a lot of places to rent cabins if you prefer.  We've done both.

What about Kentucky?  I've only been through, but it's a beautiful state.

Does your family enjoy certain types of music or entertainment?  Perhaps look at several places and see what type of festivals they may have...  For instance; a lot of places have Blue Grass Festivals during the summer.  Maybe do your vacation around something you all enjoy like that.
