Blossom'sGirl
I just signed up my oldest for the CLEP US 1 test at a local college. I was OK with the $80 test fee, but was blindsided by the additional $70 test center fee. Is this normal? Michelle
Lori D.
Yes, it is normal for the test center to charge a fee for their services. The amount of the fee varies from center to center. You might see if there is another center within driving range that administers the CLEPs you need for a lower fee. In our area both the state university and the community college test centers administer CLEPs. Both charge $45/test as the test center fee, which has to be paid directly to the test center as a separate check or credit/debit card purchase at the time of testing. The CLEP itself is purchased online in advance. Sorry to hear your CLEP test center fee is so high! If there is no cheaper test center option available to you, maybe it will help to focus on how much MORE it would cost for your student to earn that college credit by actually having to pay tuition and take the 3-credit or 4-credit class. For example, our CC charges $98/credit, so a 3-credit course costs $294, and a 4-credit course costs $392 -- so CLEP would save almost $150-250. But our state university charges $841/credit, so a 3-credit course costs $2523, and a 4-credit course costs $3364 -- giving a CLEP savings of over $2300-3200 per course!! When I think of it in those terms, a total of $150 for CLEP + test center fee seems QUITE reasonable. ;) BEST of luck in your CLEP adventures! :) Warmest regards, Lori D.
G5052
Yes, the local community college charges $30. One county over, the community college charges $75. So it pays to shop around, if you can. We get no break on dual enrollment tuition, so doing CLEP's is still very cost effective. The REA study guides are also much, much cheaper than college books! My oldest is going to take a history CLEP in August before he starts school. Tuition and the book would be about $550.
Melissa B
That seems high. The sites (colleges) around us charge $30 for administration, plus $80 for the exam.
elegantlion
I checked my school and they also charge $30.

Blossom'sGirl
I shopped around online yesterday. Of several of the places the College Board said they tested, most said they did not do it anymore. We live in the southern tier of NY if anyone knows a cheaper option.
