smileyme
Kid is finishing second grade, and does 4'th grade math, Rather than just increasing her workbook level, wanted to challenge her more at the 3/4 grade level. Is this right age to start MOEMS and Math counts? A friend suggested AOPS, but that looks better for middle school kids. Maybe a parent of an older kid,can advise the right age to start these. wapiti
Elementary MOEMS, possibly. I'd hold off a bit on MathCounts. Have you looked at Beast Academy? That's the elementary program from AoPS.
sweetpea3829
I don't know much about MOEMS and the others but...you should definitely check out Beast Academy. It's wonderful.
SilverMoon
The lower MOEMS group is grades 4-6. That could be a good fit. Math Counts is for higher maths. Beast Academy could be fun. :)
smileyme
Thanks, will try Beast academy then! Had heard of it, earlier... but Beast is kinda scary to try on my kids
wintermom
Beast Academy is excellent. The first book, 3A is amazing. Our whole family loves doing the puzzles. My ds 9 finished Saxon 6/5, and he's doing BA 3A right now. It's challenging for him.
maize
Another vote for BA.
kateingr
Yes, Beast! I've written a reveew and article about the benefits of in-depth problem-solving if you'd like to read a parent's perspective on using Beast.
Miss Tick
I purchased some older Math Kangaroo exams which we worked through occasionally. My dc called it puzzle-math. There is little computation, but a lot of logic. This would be a supplement, obviously. I have one that uses BA, it is well done.
smileyme
Thanks for the ideas. I am doing some MOEMS, but only few problems would be friendly to her. I am going to be reviewing BA. She is now well into Singapore math daily practice, so it has become routine for her. Thanks again.
smileyme
Hello, agree with everyone on Beast Academy. Just wonderful fun logical thinking... not a beast at all on kids :)
SoCal_Bear
another +1 on Beast and Math Kangaroo. Maybe Zaccaro's Challenge Math or Borac Competition Math books. With Beast, I would start at 3A, there's a lot of great stuff in there worth doing. Maybe consider Borenson's Hands On Equations.
