tmstranger
Which teaching DVD do you prefer?? This would be for Algebra 1. I'm only 85% confident in my ability to teach this. :) I watched a sample of Saxon Teacher on Christianbook, but I can't find a sample of DIVE. I'm pretty sure my ds is going to hate Saxon Teacher...I couldn't stand watching the sample...
SparklyUnicorn
I have Saxon Teacher for Algebra 1 and I bought the Art Rich DVDs for Algebra 2 (we are currently in Algebra 2). I liked the Saxon Teacher discs. They show every single problem worked out step by step. I didn't tend to use it unless we needed it, but it was much better than just having a solutions manual because she talks it all out. The Art Rich one's aren't bad but he only goes over the concepts. We don't always find a need to watch it so we aren't getting much use out of them. Next level I'm getting the Teacher ones again. I know nothing about DIVE.
tmstranger
Thanks. I would probably only use it if we couldn't figure out the answer to a problem...right now, we just use DH! LOL!
Heather in VA
There are samples of DIVE on their website.
Free Indeed
We liked Dive for teaching, but really wanted to be able to see each problem worked out and talked out when we needed- so we use both. A little expensive, but I have several children to go through.
Nemom
We are using Saxon Teacher 87 for the first time. Dd says that it sounds like a "really" old lady and that she doesn't explain the "why" behind the examples. BUT I think the visual is helping her to understand better. I may still purchase the DIVE dvds and see how they work or use both like a pp.
FriedClams
We LOVE the Art Reed videos. Concise. Slightly funny. Highly recommend them.
tmstranger
We LOVE the Art Reed videos. Concise. Slightly funny. Highly recommend them. Where do you buy the Art Reed videos?
tmstranger
Actually, I found the Art Reed DVDs on Christianbook...I really like it! I like his teaching style...easy to follow...I wish it covered the problems from the textbook, but I still feel like my son would not "hate" these. Thank you for the suggestion. I'll have ds watch the sample in the morning, so we can decide.
monalisa
My dd12 is using DIVE cds for Saxon 7/6 and she likes them (as much as she can like math). Dr. David Shormann's voice is very calming, which helps her I think! I highly recommend them, and plan to use them as long as we use Saxon. I also plan to buy Saxon Teacher to have all the solutions worked out, once we get into the higher levels beyond 8/7. David Shormann now has his own math, starting with Algebra I, so I might do that when we get there instead of Saxon (I think it is a live online class). HollyDay
We've used both Saxon Teacher and Art Reed. Dd actually liked both. She liked how Art Reed taught the lesson. He included short cuts, additional ways to solve, common problems, tricky/sticky things to look out for and avoid. He included lots of examples but not solutions to the actual text problems. Saxon Teacher is a "talking white board." It shows the solutions to all the problems in the text and on the text. Both sets of cdroms are very useful.
KarenNC
To throw another option into the mix, check out the Virtual Homeschool Group's free online at your own pace Saxon courses--- www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com . They have voice threads for the lessons, online problem sets, and online tests (automatic grading), with open office hours at least a couple of times a week that the students can go to if they have further questions. You can always sign up just to check it out and drop it if it isn't a good fit, or just use portions of the program. We've used Art Reed (algebra 1/2), VHG (algebra 1 and 2), and Saxon Teacher (algebra 2). At this point, she's using the Saxon Teacher dvd lessons and doing the VHG online tests. All of them have their pros and cons, depends on what your student prefers. We never did DIVE because we don't like theology mixed in with math, so I can't speak to that one.
