Guest Krisserc
Has anyone had experience with this curriculum. Thinking of it for 10 yr old son.
Laura Corin
I used it when my eldest was about eight. It was fun but he didn't retain anything. The course was designed to whet children's appetites so that they were ready to move on to something more serious. We used Latin Prep from Galore Park. You might want to repost on one of the educational sub boards to get more input.
mumto2
We did it as a supplement to LC when they were in the 8 to 10 year old range. We just had the student books and enjoyed them. Agree with Laura, it was a fun course designed as an easy introduction to Latin. They designed it as an introduction to Cambridge Latin which we have also used. JDoe
Very nice and light introduction to Latin Language, but do not expect more payoff than maybe getting some interest in the subject.
Grover
yup, agree - fun introduction, don't expect much retention, gets them interested.
RootAnn
We did it over a summer in between two other beginning Latin programs. It was a great way to realize what style of learning Latin didn't work for us. The throw-a-bunch-of-new-words-at-them-in-a-story was not a way that we learned well. If I would have turned all the new vocab into flashcards & drilled them, they might have learned something. But that would have removed the 'fun' factor. It wasn't a worthwhile purchase for us, but to each his or her own!
UrbanSue
It's an introduction to their 7-12th grade Cambridge Latin which is a "reading program". It's great and definitely one way to learn. I'm studying with it myself and we plan to have at least one of our kids use it. We do Minimus and it's working well for my 8 and 10yos. It probably helps, though, that my husband is an accomplished latinist and uses it every day for his job and I'm studying on my own ;) I wouldn't think it would be a good fit otherwise. It was designed as an introduction, but its writing post-dates Cambridge by some years. The idea was to interest people in Latin in primary school before they had the chance to study it more seriously using Cambridge in secondary school. Because of the school change at age 11/12, senior school teachers would assume no prior Latin learning (because not all primary schools would use Minimus), so retention of Minimus was not an issue. I studied Cambridge in the 1970s and one of my teachers wrote Minimus.
