shadanjem
Looking for ideas on Geology for next year then 10th grade son. There are a number of Tarbuck books....argh. He's finishing Miller/Levine Biology and we have used the teacher test bank to increase his familiarity with typical tests. He'll also be taking Chemistry next year (book as of yet unknown). But he is remotely considering geology/paleontology undergrad, so we discussed a geology class next year. Could be a full year or a single semester - open for suggestions. Not wanting general earth science - just geology. Thanks in advance for suggestions. I've seen some have added on a Teaching Company course and we aren't opposed to that as well. Actually, I'm pretty open to all suggestions as this is an "extra" science class for him. Thanks, Danielle
Pam L in Mid Tenn
*Listening* for replies..... We are considering Geology for next year too.
kiana
Not sure if DE is available, but if he's quite interested you might consider dual enrollment. Mit OCW has a geology course which requires no background (12.001) Here's some coursera courses as well: https://www.coursera.org/course/earth and https://www.coursera.org/course/amnhearth
Sweet Home Alabama
We used a Teaching Company lecture with Dr. John Renton about geology. Excellent!!! My son also used BJU Earth Science with this, but the text is meant for 8th grade. You wouldn't use it for high school. Not sure of a high school text or resources at the moment.
Cathrynlyn
Several titles appear on amazon with the search words "Geology for college"
EmilyGF
He must read some John McPhee. We read The Control of Nature. Amazing. McPhee covers the big picture and is a great writer. They were required reading in Ge 1 (the "let's-get-to-know-geology class) at Caltech.

I've only begun my research, but I did find the above website. I haven't dug too deeply into it yet.

Lori D.
Once you settle on a text and/or lectures (some Earth Science text suggestions in: "Removing from charter school 4th quarter"), here are some suggestions for go-along labs (some specifically for Geology) in this past thread: "How do I add a lab to Earth Science course?" shadanjem
LoriD - your way better at navigating this forum than I am. I searched and searched (I thought) and still ended up confused. Thanks everyone! This might actually be doable. :)
Lori D.
LoriD - your way better at navigating this forum than I am. I searched and searched (I thought) and still ended up confused. Thanks everyone! This might actually be doable. :) I know; it's a complete mystery to me, too, as to what comes up (or doesn't) whenever I do a search… I often have to go to Google. :001_rolleyes: But, I was lucky and just now found one more past thread for you: "Geology curriculum and/or resources to create a course?"
