4ofus
Did anyone else's kid here take this? Mine took it this year for the first time. All three of us are hoping to see the scores before winter break. What do you think? Is it likely or should we just put it out of our minds until January? daijobu
In the past we've received our scores in December, some time before the holiday.
Lilaclady
I think the worked solutions are on AOPS so if your kids wrote their answers down, you can get it but it should be out soon. all the best.
4ofus
Thanks y'all. The data that's on the MAA site is aggregate data & perfect scorers. We know they didn't make perfects so that doesn't tell us anything really. My kids did mark their answers in the test booklet in hopes of receiving their booklet back & being able to check their answers. Unfortunately they didn't get their booklets back. They do know how they answered on some things & we've played around with those. Since break begins this weekend I'm pretty sure we won't be hearing anything until January. daijobu
Has anyone else received their AMC8 scores yet? I organized our exam at our local library, and I'm pretty sure the scores are going to the children's librarian, lol. I don't mind complying with the rules, but it makes it difficult for me when parents are emailing me asking about their scores.

Rivka
Alex's math coach told us the scores would be back before Christmas, but we haven't heard anything. Alex is only 9, and was taking the test because her coach thought it would be good practice and not because we thought she'd do particularly well, so I'm not on the edge of my seat waiting for the scores. She and I decided we'd be delighted if she got 8/25, which her coach says is the average score for an 8th grader, but I've already told her that what made me proudest was that she signed up willingly, knowing it would be over her head. Ha, I posted this and then the scores came tonight. Alex got a 10, and she is thrilled. A number of kids in her math program did exceptionally well - there was a perfect score, and there was a 5th grader who only missed one. I am impressed! 4ofus
We finally received our test scores today. They got them out before the year ended! Haha! It was a great experience! If you all haven't gotten their scores yet they should hopefully be coming soon!

daijobu
Drat. Our proctor is the librarian and I think she's on vacation, so we may not get official score reports until 2015. I wish they'd just mail them to me, and then my students would have their results by now.

VANURSEPRAC
How do I find Math Circles and math club type organizations in my hometown? I have tried googling this to no avail. I have an 11 y/o daughter that attends public school. She has expressed some interest in this.
Kathy in Richmond
How do I find Math Circles and math club type organizations in my hometown? I have tried googling this to no avail. I have an 11 y/o daughter that attends public school. She has expressed some interest in this. If she's in a public middle school, look for a school sponsored club that participates in either MathCounts or the AMC 8 competition. Your username suggests you're in VA, which has plenty of MathCounts teams. She'd have to go through her school, though; MathCounts is picky about that. Here's a searchable listing of teams registered for the current school year. If her school doesn't participate, then you could contact their math department & see about helping to set one up for next year. Here's a national listing of math circles. Unfortunately, they're not very common in VA outside of the DC suburbs.
snowbeltmom
My daughter just received an email from the library (the head librarian proctored the exam) with a link to her AMC 8 score results. She made the Honor Roll!
4ofus
How exciting snowbeltmom!! Congratulations to your daughter! My 6th grader made Achievement Roll & my 5th grader got a 13. They're pretty happy. Ok, the 6th grader is happiest. The 5th grader now has a fire in his belly! Next year!!! Haha

daijobu
I did receive my results last week. My librarian missed the email for a few days, but we have it now. Congratulations, everyone! Who's taking the AMC 10?
4ofus
The boys didn't score so high that I'd put them in the AMC 10, but even if they had, we'd have missed the deadline to sign up in our area. Our results came too late. I wonder if AMC 10 enrollment will be affected by keeping enrollment confined to the kids who already knew they were going to knock AMC 8 out of the park + on grade level kids. Edited for typo. Kathy in Richmond
Is there a good way of deciding whether to take the AMC 10? I'd recommend letting your child take a practice AMC 10 and evaluating how that goes. There are plenty of past exams & answer keys on the AoPS website. Did they enjoy it? Were they satisfied with their score? Some kids are happy starting young & not having all the needed math or speed skills under their belts yet. They just roll with a lower score, knowing that they'll improve in the future. Other more perfectionistic kids might freak out & want to wait till they can score higher. They might still enjoy taking the AMC 10 for fun at home after it's posted online. My son took both AMC 8 and 10 together in grade 8, the first year that homeschoolers were allowed to participate in the competitions. He was more than ready, making AIME that year. My daughter started in elementary school for AMC 8 because she saw big brother doing it & wanted to do the same. She added the AMC10 a couple of years later, when she was scoring 20+ on the AMC 8. I wouldn't worry about the AMC office grading the 10/12 exams in time for the AIME. It won't be a problem!

4ofus
This was our first year taking the test, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but everyone I talk to seems baffled by the way it's going this year. 1053, have you received the results you're looking for yet? If not, I hope you do soon.

daijobu
We received our scores in early January. But now it's been at least a week since I submitted our registration for AMC10, and I haven't heard anything. I called yesterday and was told to call again on Monday. 4ofus
My son's name appeared on the website on Dec. 31, & we received an email from our proctor with scores the same day. I did notice that the website had no changes for a long while after that & just recently updated. Very strange.

Kathy in Richmond
You've got to realize that the AMC 8s are a "fun" contest and not a prerequisite for any of the higher level tests. Up until a few years ago, scores were not posted online at all. Contest managers had to wait till much later in the year to receive a print book with the listings of kids who scored at the Achievement or Honor Roll levels. As long as you've received your kids' individual scores this year by email or mail, I wouldn't be worried. If the AMC office is busy (as it most certainly is this time of the year!), I'd expect that their priorities would be on running the AMC 10, 12, AIME, and USAMO. They will get around to posting the scores online when they have the time. Steve Dunbar & crew have been doing a terrific job running these competitions for a long time now, and I expect that this year won't be an exception. daijobu
Wow, my librarian informed me that she just received the packet of AMC 10's only TODAY. I wonder is this typical? I'm just glad I had forgotten about it last week, or I would have been stressed out the whole weekend.
