tammyw
Watching the opening ceremonies has me inspired to dig deeper into Russian history with my dd. Any suggestions? Something like Howard zinn youth version?
Hunter
Homeschool in the Woods Great Empires has a unit on the Russian Empire.
rosesinsummer
If you live near Minneapolis, there is an awesome exhibit on the Romanov dynasty at the Museum of Russian Art until Mar. 23rd.
DianeW88
I don't know the curriculum you're referencing, but Konos has a Russia curriculum that we've really enjoyed over the years.
Farrar
Well, definitely read the trilogy that begins with Angel on the Square by Gloria Whelan. I've never seen anything super great for Russian history, honestly. But maybe others will know of something.
DianeW88
"Russia: The Land of the Tsars" was a great series that we watched each time we studied Russia. There are a few mentions of the promiscuity of certain leaders, but a mature 11 year old should be able to handle it. We got it from our library. beth83
Isn't it amazing how most of us know nothing about Russian history? I mean, I was lost during the opening ceremonies. I'm glad they kept pointing out how isolated they were from Western civilization -- it made me not feel as bad for my lack of education concerning Russia. It's crazy to think about how they didn't experience so much of what has influenced our thinking.

Elise
Professor Carol (professorcarol.com) has a wonderful course on Imperial Russia that dd and I completed last semester. I highly recommend it! I would give anything to go on her Smithsonian tour of Russia this summer.
SereneHome
Ok, I wasn't sure if I should say anything, but.....I would suggest getting both, Russian and non-Russian authors bc you might be very surprised how different views and perceptions are and how the same periods are described so differently. austen
I don't know of any comprehensive Russian history books for kids, but you could put together your own study with historical fiction. I love Diane Stanley's Peter the Great. The Angel in the Square series is good. I just did a blog post on some Russian historical fiction that I like (jennienzor.blogspot.com). Breaking Stalin's Nose by Yelshin and The Lost Crown by Sarah Miller (about the Romanov sisters) are two of my other favorites.
8filltheheart
For an 11yr old, I would recommend Horizon Caravel's Russia Under the Czars. http://www.amazon.com/Russia-Under-Czars-Horizon-Caravel/dp/B002G1B40G
